Got to shake their hands and talk to them for a minute. Very very cool. Our very own Luciano played 3 songs with Antonio, spoke to him for a while afterwards, he's doing really well in Spain evidently. Happy for him.

Night before was $10 to see Potito with Diego, maybe 50 people in the audience, sat next to Samuel Serrano and Manuel Parrilla. Diego El Cigala in the back watching, felt very surreal. Too many good performances to even mention.

No llores, it looked sold out, that was just due to the venue size, it was an "off festival" show.

It's looking like the off festival shows are generally more interesting to me than the official festival shows.

One more day to try and get by Moraitos place.

Full disclosure I almost didn't go because I don't generally enjoy the solo guitar shows, Fred talked me into it and I'm glad he did, Antonios playing was so unreal the entire time it kept my full attention, Diego was the last song at the end.
Ya voy a ver Tia Juana del Pipa y Diego! I'll try to get a selfie.

Glad you are able to stay one more day to see Tia Juana, it's going to be great!!!

This is the Potito concert Leñador was talking about, the tickets were almost free and the place was shamefully empty. And they knew there would be a very low attendance and they still perform in those kind of venues.

Every show was spectacular, everyone needs to make a mecca to Jerez for festival at some point. It really is just a "fuente potable" of flamenco. Didn't catch his show but met Paco Cepero getting coffee by my apartment. Sadly time to leave today, but off to Sevilla for more fun and hijinx! Think I'm gunna kayak the Guadalquivir....

I only went to the Festival once, but I met Escribano (before he perdió los papeles and founded Foro Flamenco!). I think Estela was there too.

The night I remember was in the Peña de Guardia, where a couple of gentlemen from USA played some Diego de Morón falsetas and Barullo (hijo de Manuel Moneo) sang at the bar, eventually accompanied by his son, who was about 14 years old. Jerez is the last bastion of flamenco.

Thanks Morante I definitely did. What I discovered is I'd like to focus on cante accompaniment. I'll learn whatever dance my lady is learning but the rest of my energy is going towards strict cante, those Potito, Dolores and Juana shows shook me to my spine and the few tabanco juergas I got to attend really showed me how few letras I know.

Just meeting Paco Cepero would have been one of the high points for me. While Paco Pena is my favorite running the international circuit because, as I've written before, he is the nearest thing to "traditional" guitarristas, I place Paco Cepero as my favorite of the "old timers" still playing (even though he doesn't run the circuit). And I'm sure you will appreciate that Paco Cepero is one of the greatest accompanists, particularly in his earlier gigs. In fact, I think Ricardo commented earlier, and I certainly agree, Paco Cepero may just be the finest all-around flamenco guitarist today.

I have always loved baseball, and I will use a baseball analogy to describe Paco Cepero. I have always thought, and still do, that Willie Mays was the best all-around ball player bar none. There may have been others who hit more home runs, stole more bases, got more extra base hits, scored more runs, etc. But Willie Mays did it all, and many times he was the National league leader with the Giants in several of those pursuits. And his overall record demonstrates how good he was overall. I think of Paco Cepero in the same way. There may be others who were technically more advanced, who had a wider repertoire, etc. But Paco did it all and did it well. The Willie Mays of flamenco!

Yep, we even visited you in Cadíz that week (in 2004), remember? Estela was there too. The forum had just started and I hadn't lost my marbles at that point, but now I am stuck with it :-).

I filmed the Moneos that night but have since lost the footage ;-( If I recall, la peña guardia was Los Cernícalos?

I agree that the Jerez festival should put everything into perspective for a bedroom guitarist.

It definitely was! I agree, his playing is goes beyond guitar, it's flamenco, it's barrio Santiago.
