Mayte Martin Querencia

What are your thoughts on this album?

I've been listening to it quite a bit this past month on my way to and from work.

Her cante style is quite unique and it is interesting to here the vocal falsetas in a more clear less guttural tone.

The Seguiriyas and Alegria are my two favorite from the album.

I tried to check out a few of her other works, but she seems to have gone into a strange Bolero area that I'm not as fond of.

I think that she is a great singer. There is an earlier album “Muy Fragil” that you would probably like.

She won the Lámpara Minera at the Concurso Nacional de La Unión in 1987 – probably a remarkable feat for a female, gay, paya and Catalan in the macho, pro gypsy and Spanish world of flamenco.

I think she gave up on her recording company and her latest Bolero stuff was crowdsourced.

I went to a solo concert she gave at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona in the 1990’s and it was electrifying. She did many tours accompanying the dancer Belen Maya and I saw her in London..

She always dresses in black - here she is with Belen Maya.

Interesting, not something I think about to often.

I recall watching a few interviews with Moraito and Tomatito where they mused about the importance of the gitano suffrage and discrimination to Flamenco music.

I hadn't really considered the discrimination of non Gypsies in the Flamenco world.

Anyways, I have checked out Muy Fragil. Its great as well, but I prefer Querencia for some reason. Those two are the best I've listened to so far from her.

Really don't know anyone who signs like her. As I said above, I find it educational as I can hear the scales more clearly.

I would recommend Vidalita from Querencia. The form has its origins in Argentina. One of the greatest exponents was Juanito Valderrama to whom she pays homage in the CD notes. Perhaps it’s not for all flamenco enthusiasts but the voice control is amazing.

What a coincidence you posted this today - I hadn't heard of the vidalita before until this morning when looking at the wikipedia page for ida y vuelta. Magnificent!!

Thanks for the thread. I'd completely overlooked this singer and clearly need to get the album - because I could become a big fan...

You will find examples of very ugly guitar accompaniment on some of the online Vidalitas – some by quite famous guitarists – I don’t want to name them. I looked for a Vidalita recording by a younger Juanito Valderrama but I could only find the one which he did towards the end of his life. However here is an earlier Milonga accompanied sensitively by Pepe Martinez .

She's not in any of the the inner circles or "families" of flamenco. Sadly I suspect more people in flamenco remember her for not speaking well of José Mercé back in the day than for her singing.

I like the peteneras and alegrías from Querencia.

"Por la Mar Chica del Puerto" from her Miguel Hernández album is very powerful. Even though it's not a flamenco album, her singing style still has flamenco details.

Her "bulerías" " Procuro olvidarte", is not bulerías, but a song with a vague backing of compás and makes me think of how flamenco is developing.

Many young singers only know 3 or 4 palos badly and flesh out their performance with this kind of cuplés and canciones with a backing of tangos or bulerías.

I remember a juerga of several hours with José Millán and David Serva. When they were worn out, José said "You are the first tocaor capable of accompanying all of my cante". David repied " You are a real encyclopedia of cante."

This level of knowledge and expertise is the result of many hours or years of study. In these days of ordenadores and móviles, most young people do not want this kind of work.

As a result, most young singers want to be instant stars but do not know the cante. This is the future of flamenco
