As Paco admits in La Busqueda, he taught Paco how improvisation works. (Al and John were just like, "Just go for it man" which frustrated PDL IMO)
Here is a fantastic interview with great insights on music and sweet little examples. Especially nice is his closing indian raga.

LC taught paco improv? Interesting,I haven't seen the film yet. In light and shade PDL talks about the frustration, and how liberating it was when he could finally improv, but it didn't say how he learned.
