Flamenco Guitar Method for Beginner ...

Hi there,

I am new here and also new to the flamenco guitar world.

I have more than 10 years of playing classical guitar experience, and graduated from music school years ago. I have been dreaming to learn Flamenco guitar for many years but couldn't find any teacher in my town. I see some method books are available in local music store, but not sure if they are great for beginners. Hope you guys can give some comments or any other suggestions ( better with link provided ) are welcomed.

What I can buy right away are :

Juan Martin's El Arte Flamenco de la Guitarra

Juan Martin's 42 solos Flamencos with DVDs - Just score, no text.

Graf-martinez's Flamenco Guitar Method in 2 Volumes - Seems promising to me.

The Keys to Flamenco Guitar Vol.1 by Dennis Koster

Thank you very much and hope you all have a happy 2012!

Cheers!

Francis

pick this up if these are the choices

Welcome to the wonderful foro Dandanfran . Also take a look at Manuel Granados materials if you have to study on your own, they are cool too. Here you can find lots of wonderful players and teachers as well who are giving lessons by Skype too. Ricardo is the man my opinion: www.ricardomarlow.com
Enjoy Flamenco Mate, your classical background will help you heaps. Good luck

From your selection, i would also say Graf Martinez.
But also consider the Ecuentro DVDs.
Online lessons with Jason McGuire or Ricardo is another Option.

To second (or third) the others, I'd go with Graf-Martinez from among the options on your original list.

That said, if on account of your experience (both from playing other styles of guitar and from having attended a music school) you're a fast learner of flamenco, then I'd recommend getting the Encuentro DVD from Gerardo Nunez. Totally worth it.

Lastly, --and this isn't always appreciated by experienced guitarists learning flamenco for the first time-- one of the most important aspects of flamenco guitar is being able to play "in compas" with respect to the different "palos" (rhythmic structures) constitutive of flamenco music. So, in addition to learning some of the distinctive right hand techniques, you'll want to start becoming acquainted with the different palos, if you aren't already.

Welcome to the foro!

I think Graf-Martinez teaches boring, uninspiring material and in some cases questionable technique.

I say go for Granados + DVDs or Oscar Herrero, and if you really have to source from your local music store, then Juan Martin at least has more interesting material than Graf-Martinez.

Thanks everyone, maybe I will go for Manuel Granados. Which one were you guys talking about? He has a lot of books published as I can google.

Cheers

Just some other options that have really helped me along over the last two years:

Online (pre-recorded) lessons with:

Jason McGuire: http://www.flamenco-lessons.com/
Adam del Monte https://www.newlearningvision.com/
Jose Tanaka: http://www.flamencoguitarlesson.com/
Ricardo Marlow & others www.flamenco-teacher.com

Also as mentioned in previous reply, live skype lessons with Ricardo Marlow: http://www.ricardomarlow.com/

Good Luck

Where do you live that there is no teacher?
If you are really serious about it, just books are not going to be enough.
One on one lessons are the best way to learn flamenco, so find a teacher or do the Skype lessons. I see nobody here likes the Juan Martin books, that is what my teacher had me play for the first two years. It got the job done.
