Luthier Forum

Can we make it for people who build guitars only?

Might add more value...

Well Joan, it sounds like someone "turned your crank" a little too hard (sorry, it's an American expression). I personally am not in favor of eliminated the non-builders since I have occasionally had my mind piqued by thoughts from non-professionals, although there have been a couple of non-building experts in the past to got under my skin a tiny bit. Like the one who suggested I should be beheaded .

If you are becoming farty and cranky about guitar making, and get bothered by or intolerant of meaningless comments, or excessively orange finishes, congratulations, all signs that you're getting better at making guitars.

With time and effort you could achieve Anders' level of farty attitude, John's penchant for metaphorical beheadings, or my Trumpian thin-skinned ranting talents. Keep at it, only time and experience can make you truly deplorable in the eyes of guitarists and their wives who despise you for tempting them to spend $5000.00 on a useless wood box.

I´m happy to welcome yet another member to our exclusive club of grumpy run-out guitarbuilding foro-members tired of the way things are.
I´m glad you are saying things out loudly. We´ve had way to many builders that left because they got tired of all the socalled experts.

Some years ago there was a very ambitious guy starting a luthier forum for builders only. I joined and I know that several other builders from here did so as well. I havent been there since it started, so I dont know how it turned out. I have more than enough with just being here.

I'm no luthier although I do make the odd guitar. Would I be allowed to participate even though I do not dip my toe in the flamenco tradition but do appreciate fine craftsmanship? I can raise my cranky temperament while doing so by yelling at the neighbour's kids beforehand.

I started one on Facebook a makers only group. It is useful, but I thought in some ways it just becomes a wood benders circle jerk. Like yeah, here's is another brilliant head stock carving and look another fantastic rosette...etc.

Probably learn more in a mixed up public forum- but if you want to focus on guitar making skills only and not specific to flamenco there is a forum that is excellent for that purpose because it is mostly makers and is moderated in such a way that players don't interact very often. The focus is on technique of making not flamenco or classical. With due respect to various ways moderators handle their sites, meaning not putting Shearston down for being more hands off, you might like to take a look at MIMF - Musical Instrument Makers Forum- the content is excellent and the teaching is fairly solid.

That said I enjoy the freewheeling and off topic veers this foro takes because it's just the flavor that has developed here. Everyone knows how to act and where the limits are, and if they don't we don't see them any longer. On MIMF the ship is not as fun in terms of joking around, but the people are vetted for knowledge and character. Jerks don't get on there for more than about 5 minutes. It took me about ten years as a member to get in trouble for being sassy, that is how much of the fear of God the moderator puts in you.

In my opinion the two best forums for our kind of guitar making are Flamenco Foro and MIMF- Del Camp is ok too, but you have to deal with classical vs. flamenco bias all the time...as per usual. In the end you teach yourself to build and show what you do to other makers for feedback. Picking the right people to give you feedback is important. Someone might be really nice, but totally wrong, or another person really a jerk, but correct. You have to be tough enough to get through that.

If a person in the gallery is hassling you or trying to challenge your knowledge for no good reason- This is how to respond:

That seems pretty ridiculous. How would such a thing be enforced? Some proof that a guitar was built by said member? I have significant wood working experience, have made two sets of bone nuts and saddles and have a set of wood sitting in my garage to build a guitar, which I may or may not ever take on. It would be a loss for non-luthiers to not be able to discuss guitar building and seems elitist. Its not like there are tons of people here in the first place.

What's the purpose of a restricted foro? More rigorous infos? To set a collaborative environment?
The only good reason I'd see is to set a group of aknowledged people, to understand who is writing. But this is quite clear here and there is a nice interaction between pro-players, amateurs and luthiers.

Btw, I've built many guitars and followed a guitar making course and never felt the need to qualify myself as a guitar maker. In fact, I don't think I am or don't care.

Yes, the MIMF is a very valuable place. Make sure to register and you can surf the library. I have been there many many hours and very seldom wasted my time.

The MIMF is not restricted in any way, no are players discouraged from joining or speaking. Most of the people there are players who built, some build a lot some a little. But all are welcome.
