English Flamenco podcast ideas

Hello, if I were to launch an English language flamenco podcast, what would people want to hear about? Musical analysis? History? Album/concert reviews? Interviews with English speaking flamenco musicians? Maybe I could get phone interviews with some people on the forum? Let me know!

What (aside from the spoken word) would an english language podcast have to offer that we can't have right here on the Foro? All we need to do to establish a topic is start a thread on whatever interests us, and members participate with ideas and opinions. As far as member interviews go, most have at one time or another written about how they came to flamenco, what their favorite artists are, etc. Not saying it's a bad idea, just seems to me like a verbal redundancy.

I totally agree. The foro is brilliant. Lots of different aficionados with a wealth of knowledge and experience. No need for podcasts.

I liked what @DavidRG was doing. I still listen in to the Spanish podcast from time to time but I think he's stopped doing the English version (I imagine it was a lot of work to keep both versions going!).
It was nice of him for instance to pass on questions from foro members to the people he interviewed, kind of like a reddit AMA session.
I can tell you one thing I would personally find interesting: in-depth history of very specific aspects of flamenco. Of course, that would mean quite a lot of research but if you could do 2 hours on the evolution of flamenco shoe fastenings or of the patterns on a manton de manila, I would listen to that. But then again, I'm a nerd.

Well, I was being serious. I really would be excited about 2-hours on the evolution of flamenco shoe fastenings and then I'd probably bore the hell out of my girlfriend by telling her all about it

@Gabewolf. Just one thing about phone interviews. Watch out with those because you really need a good audio set-up (and so does the person you're interviewing). I've stopped listening to a few interviews on some podcasts because of that. Usually you get good quality audio from the interviewer and bad quality from the interviewee, which makes it really hard to listen to. Anyways, it's just a technical detail but it makes all the difference in the world when you're listening to the end result.

I hadn't read your reply, it's not about you.

BTW, can anyone remind me what's the flamenco podcast that has really big episodes with music and history of the subject? I heard the El Pele one and I think it was almost two hours but now I don't remember what it was called.

@Piwin I agree with what you said about phone interviews, and I also often will shut off a podcast with poor quality phone interviews. I have access to a recording studio and will do some research on recording phone calls if that is what I decide to do. I like your idea of doing an in-depth history. Maybe the first few podcasts could be about the various cultures that settled in Andalusia and their musical traditions prior to flamenco. There is so much content one could cover pre-flamenco, it'd be interesting to see what I can dig up online and in some books.

Historical stuff. Yes!!! Also, in a similar vein, how about a break down of the various sub-palos. I.e. each show you could take a different melody for the verses of solea and put together 5 or 10 minutes worth of explanations / examples with reference to key cantaoras. For example, one week could be what were the specific contributions to solea melody that came out of Triana (or any other town). Yes, it's been discussed here before, but too often we burn out and just discuss marmite instead. An audio account would be very useful.

Similarly, why not have a 5 minute slot dedicated to a letra or two. Read the letra in good Spanish so people with poor Spanish can catch the words, translate line by line, and finally play some tracks with that / those letras. I'd be your #1 fan if you did that - especially if listenners could suggest the letras they'd like broken down .

I trust you are referring to the "Marmite" thread in which you enthusiastically contributed five comments, including the one below.

"For the unitnitiated, spread it thin over buttered toast, or stick it in a soup you're making or add 1 teaspoon of hot water. Go easy on the dosage, it's easy to get mouth ulcers if you OD. Great way to boost your vitamin B intake!!"

You appear to have embraced the "Marmite" thread, Dudnote.
