New DVD Paco/John in Switzerland 1987

From http://www.lanacion.com.ar/1884510-el-amigo-paco-de-lucia

"Aunque no llegamos a grabar aquel CD, te puedo decir que muy pronto se dará a conocer una grabación de un concierto en Suiza que hicimos juntos en 1987. El DVD también. Así que estoy muy feliz por eso, porque es un verdadero documento."

Excellent! Though we have already tons on YouTube of the duo. I wonder if this isn't already out there?

Well, true, and there is this Berlin concert from 1987 on youtube, so probably we are talking about the same tour. I am not sure though if the one that is going on DVD is something we already saw, I hope not so we get to have something new and in high quality audio/video :)

Montreux festival is in Switzerland I thought. At least two concerts I have seen footage of from there. Could be the show included in the McLaughlin box set (referenced in PDL discography) which is only audio but different from vids I have seen.

Seems it is pretty much different than the stuff available on YouTube, but same type of program of course. June 24 it comes out.

Got it in the mail today! Really excellent box, very cheap for what you get: DVD, 2 CD, 91+ minutes, $20.

A few cool pictures and a nice forward about the concert from John McLaughlin who apparently over saw this project. here is my review for those that are interested.

First of all, two similar concerts are available to watch on YouTube, so it is safe to compare this to those two. In fact of the other two available, and older Montreux concert and one in Germany, the one from Germany is probably done a few days before or after this, so I will keep comparisons down to just that one example. Paco has the same shirt on after all, but the two concerts still differ quite a bit.

First positives:
The quality of picture and filming is great, and I prefer watching these on big screen TV to the computer or whatever. 99% of my favorite DVD's of flamenco guitar or whatever concert, are in non USA format. This one seems to work on my American player which is big plus for me (I have also a temperamental international player that I reserve exclusively for watching the rest of my favorites). The improvisations on this concert are of course subtly different to other performances, if you are into the details it's great, but obviously to some it's the same type of concert. In that regard we can say Mclaughlin was especially inspired compared to other performances, probably why he chose this particular night. His solo guitar piece right off the bat has a different vibe to other versions, shows that he really likes to change it up. Paco's solo was the same Buleria pretty much as in Germany, and he really gets the audience going at times.

I would love to go piece by piece to pick out the best Solo moments but it would take too long. Let's just point out what is unique in this show. First Frevo, is played about 20 bpm SLOWER than they normally do. It allows both players to deliver a different expression with the fast runs, more "groovy" if you want. McLaughlin takes the opportunity to push his speed limit into six tuplet realm which he never did on any other version I know of. So they get to the end of the piece where the main theme repeats and they suddenly kick the tempo back up, probably faster than normal and keep the energy going until the dramatic trade off ending. This version therefore stands out as unique from any of the other duo or trio versions you can find.

Next, there is replacement piece to the one seen in Germany, Sichia (passion grace and fire version) is done instead of Caña de Azucar. I have never seen a video of this, it is quite special. The cool tango sounding middle section, is unfortunately obscured by an artistic behind the neck camera angle, made it frustrating for us players. But actually there are several thumb behind the neck shots that, with this quality of video, make you feel like you are up on stage with these guys. Anyway, Sichia includes the "Convite" chord progression (chromatic dominant chords) after each solo, and again, a cool sped up ending more like the original version.

And last there is a new version of Guardian angel, much heard piece from the past, McLaughlin does some cool things playing the melody with Paco, like off set the timing, so it sounds as delay, or harmonized thirds etc, again a very unique version of this piece.

The only negative thing I would say, is the live sound during PDL's solo, they left Mclaughlin's mic open so it rings a little bit, but never feedback. Also the typical 80's, super crispy high end, syrupy reverb, and scooped mid range, and digital chorus on JM's guitar, leave something to be desired. Of the 3 audio options, I preferred the DTS over the others for it's live presence. It is pretty much the same in Germany so it's not a major complaint. The balance of the two guitars is pretty good most of the time.

You beat me to it hahahaha. Thank you for a very comprehensive review
I got my copy yesterday in FNAC for 22 euros in Spain.

The DVD is region free so will work in any country. That is a big plus. I really liked the concert in Freiberg 1986 and I always wanted a commercial recording of a live concert by these two at the time. This set certainly delivers. It is a fabulous recording of an exceptional performance by two artists at the top of their game. I agree about the open mic on Pacos solo but to be honest its only noticable in the first minute and then you are lost in his incredible playing.
The soloing gets more intense as the concert goes on. Pacos playing in Chiquito is astounding...im running out of superlatives.
I know a lot of flamenco afficionados who criticise Flamenco/jazz but even if this is the case one can not ignore this acrobatic show case of musicianship that will appeal to any guitarist.

Sorry but I thought you had the Mclaughlin box set. Do you know for sure if its the same recording or another one?? I assume they only did one night for the jazz festival so it must be the same recording ....or at least the same show.
Do have a copy of the box set recording to compare?

The box, years ago when I saw it in the record store which is non existent today, was about $275....I didn't have the cash at the time, and kicked myself ever since thinking they would later release it's contents as individual discs. I knew the story about what was in the box from interviews with McLaughlin and Dimeola's personal account about it on his forum (also gone, like the record stores LOL). the story being, Montreux has a trio concert archived but Al refused to let Mc use it for HIS box, and said they could only release it as a separate show as it was not "the Mclaughlin trio". So Mc put in only the duet concert, I am assuming it's this one as the other concert where Paco hits the mic several times is not ideal. I came across on YouTube a version of Frevo that was live audio and not from any videos I knew and assumed it was from the box. I will have to try to find that and see if it matches.

EDIT...turns out it is quite different. The uploaded claims it is from the Box, I can tell it is probably an older performance. So I guess this means the new release is unique both audio and video:

I looked up the track listing from the MClaughlin box set. Whilst the track list is the same
the length of the tracks is different from the new CD set. Not just a second or two but sometimes over a minute on some tracks.

(from the Mclaughlin box set)
10:1 –John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucía One Melody & My Foolish Heart 9:09
10:2 –John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucía El Panuelo 6:12
10:3 –John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucía Spain 10:11
10:4 –John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucía Chiquito 8:45
10:5 –John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucía Florianapolis 11:37
11:1 –John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucía Frevo 7:55
11:2 –John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucía David 10:58
11:3 –John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucía Sichia 7:04
11:4 –John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucía Guardian Angels 6:31

However the credits on the box state that these tracks were recorded on the same date "Tracks 10:1 to 11:4 Recorded July 15,1987 Montreux Casino"
so it must be the same concert with audience noise, tunings and bum notes removed.

The Mclaughlin set also has another longer 9 minute recording of Frevo with Paco
"Track 17:2 Recorded July 8,1996 Stravinski Auditorium."
That must be the version that you are referring to in the youtube video

Ah ok, so that must have been the trio show they referred to....the 1996 tour. They pulled just the duet from that show I guess. I thought it was older version but actually on that tour they reverted back to the original Friday Night version. It all makes sense now.

Look, this guy loaded a track as soon as he got the DVD! (Eye roll)

Appreciate the nice review! I would get it just to see material from Fire Grace and Passion!

Thanks a lot for the review Ricardo.

Last night I finally found the time to watch the concert. The only remark I could make (in my personal opinion as aficionado) is that in *some* runs I would have liked more if the camera was focused on Paco's and/or John's hands rather than someplace else where you don't see guitar front. Otherwise, great concert.

Cheers
