Sevillanas

For those of you who play for dance accompaniment which Sevillanas do you use? I'm looking for suggestions. The Juan Martin stuff is too basic for me. I didn't really like the Paco Pena Toques Flamencos Sevillanas much either. Thanks.

p.s. I'm looking for solo guitar as I don't have the pleasure of working with a singer.

I used to use the Paco Pena ones, the dancer I worked with at the time recognised the melodies and said they were nice but 'very old'. They did the job but yeah, not quite interesting enough for me

I find it hard to find more modern, but not too complex stuff, the few examples I have found are the two examples below by Jason McGuire and maybe one or two of Moraito's from Feria del Caballo (the final one in particular).

First one is my favourite, wish I could find more like this:

Would be very interested to see if people have other suggestions on this.

Thanks. I'll give that E-major one a go. The Moraito is maybe more than I can handle at this point though.

From my experience student dancers can't handle complicated solo guitar sevillanas. I'd play em with some of the better dancers but for dance class I generally ended up playing chords from a cante sevillanas like Cara Cara or puerta de Toledo and adding some embellishments where I could.

To be honest it's been a while! Last time I think I had used the chord voicings from "A pastora" by Estrella Morente. Sometimes the chords are enough to suggest some kind of melody and, if you mix up the rhythm a bit but not so much that it will disturb the dancers, it works rather well IMO. "A pastora" also has a short falseta in it that has a nice little melody to it. It is pretty easy to extend and transpose to other keys. The Moraito stuff that Blondie#2 mentioned is also really good.

The Morao Sevillanas is not easy, rhythm wise.
I wouldn't start with them.
The intro is different than the "normal" too. Before you start to learn a guitar solo learn to accompany some sevillanas. lenador has mentioned some, this will be a good point to start and it is easy.
I learned 4 Sevillanas from Sabicas, technically they are pretty challenging but the rhythm isn't complex and you get the idea of the rhythm.

Ricardo (foro) composed 4 coplas a long time ago that were really nice and modern, technical too, but they also fit very well with what the dancers were doing, who were using steps for some more traditional coplas. For the class that I was playing for, only one of the morao coplas worked or fit, the rest clashed, and just wouldn't seem right. I don't know much about it but that might be something to take into consideration.

Edit: the Moraito coplas in A minor worked well I think against the the traditional sevillana in A major because both are call and response based phrasing I believe. So it depends.

Sevillanas is a lot more strict/formulaic than other palos, so one extra 3 count and the whole things off from the dancers. This article is good.

I know a lot of people that use the ones from the Juan Martin book, very are pretty traditional and simple to pull off.

One of the great things about the foro is the stored knowledge contained in all the posts made here over the years. Might I suggest using the search feature to find information about Sevillanas? You will find hundreds of posts, including many many videos of foro members playing Sevillanas, tabs of Sevillanas, videos of famous people playing Sevillanas, tutorials of how to play Sevillanas, discussions of Sevillanas structure, discussions of Sevillanas for baile, etc. A lot of people have put a lot of time into creating these resources. Many questions you have about flamenco can probably be answered quicker and better by searching rather than asking.

Voila, a slightly shaky recording of a nice falseta in Em. Again, taken from Nick's Glastonbury recording. I've no idea whether or not he wrote these.

I don't think he wrote those, I learned those falsetas from one of my teachers, I think there pretty traditional.
I may have some time tomorrow to post some just chords sevillanas.

I do not know that one but I feel like I've heard it somewhere. It does look fun to play. There seems to be an issue with playback at 0:36.

Talking of fun toys for boys, haven't seen Stephane post much recently - you got any news on your future six stringed mistress?

I'll indeed post some pics when they come in, he's just in the sketches of it now. Wrapping up the build before me.

Lasers and fog eh? Hmmmmm like a flamenco pink Floyd laser show....I think I like it. I'll do my best but dancers hate anything that takes attention away from them.

I hear it now "Fog???? How will people see my feet??? These shoes are $600 from Spain!" "What color lasers?? My bata is green and gold I don't want any clashing! "

No lasers yet but last year we used fog and the singers complained a lot about not catching breath.

Yeah fog machines can be a bit too much in the wrong environment. I used to sub for my friend in his band from time to time and they loved fog machines. In a small place with no ventilation it'll strangle you. Lol dry ice probably a little tamer.

yeah , got to admit , in the dance /rock band i didnt like it much and used to wander over to the side of the stage until the wind blew it away ,,,outside concerts , i mean ...
The Spanish used to like it a lot as it made the lights look better ...if a few musicians die on the way .....ah well .....thats art ...

Not sure without checking if all these 4 are recorded on "Fabulous Flamenco" or "Flamenco Guitar", but I'm pretty sure the A Major verse is on both recordings

EDIT: "Flamenco Guitar" is the title of the twofer of Azahara and Montoya/Ricardo - the Sevillanas is on the Azahara disc.
