The album has now made its way onto the interwebs if you know where to look... it seems like a "best of," with Nunez playing a lot of older material. Some of which I am surprised he is able to play, actually. His technique sounds a lot more solid on this record than on Travesia. :)

^^^ I'm gonna bump up the thread now and a few more times if necessary because this is a record that's definitely worth listening to. Don't come in expecting another Jucal or Andando el Tiempo simply because most of these pieces are older Nunez compositions, but this is a super solid record and it's great to hear new renditions. If you are familiar with Wakenius' work, there are some very nice solos on here... and Nunez's technique on some pieces (Philia in particular) seems like it has improved a lot since Travesia.

Another bump for good measure... a few of the pieces are on Spotify now...

I purchased the recording on Itunes yesterday, superb playing and great energy!
I find Wakenius' improvising to be very interesting and inspired.

Kind of digging it. Definitely reminds me a bit of Paco and John in terms of the melding of styles.

Haha thank you, both for the kind words and for the response! Nunez is for sure one of my favorite guitarists, perhaps second after Paco in my book. :)

A nice fusion/collaboration but not any new music.

I know what it is, it still makes me sad that Nunez is not getting the attention he deserves. This just being a "best of" album is worthy of a few more responses than there have been in this thread.

I think you made your point, Daniel, that Gerardo Nunez is one of your favorites. Nevertheless, to keep flogging the point and to admonish Foro members multiple times for not weighing in with as much excitement as you is a bit much. I think we all like and admire Gerardo's playing. A crucial lesson one learns in life, however, is that our particular passions are not always shared with equal intensity by others. Best to pursue one's passion without expecting others to follow suit. Just enjoy Gerardo's latest.

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Bill, I am not expecting people to "weigh in with as much excitement as me," and my choice to bump the thread up has nothing to do with my particular passions or wanting them to be shared by others; the fact that my passions are not shared by the majority of the population is a lesson I've learned many years ago, and something I've come to terms with. ;) In this case, though, I think it is sad when a new work by a guitarist of Gerardo Nunez's caliber goes essentially unnoticed. I'm flogging the point not because I expect others to like the release, but at the very least it deserves some recognition and support, especially in light of Nunez's injury and apparent progress in improving his technique.

You also make an interesting point in that "we all like and admire Gerardo's playing" -- I agree, and that's why it's all the more surprising that essentially nobody responded to this thread, which made me think that perhaps it just went unnoticed since discussions were going on in other threads. None of my bumps in this thread constitute an admonishment, either; simply surprised at the lack of support, which has nothing to do with the fact that Nunez is one of my favorites. I'd be equally surprised and upset if a release by a prominent guitarist who was not one of my favorites went unnoticed, because I know the sort of work that goes into recording/producing an album.

I understand both points - I'm a big fan of Gerardo's work, yet also I'm not that excited about this project, because there's no new material in there. His effort in recovering from his injury is magnificent, but I'm only going to be real excited about his new recording when he doesn't recycle older material - which he has done before many times and often to the better. I think we all agree that he's one of the best players out there even with his injury, has his own unique style and is largely unmatched as a composer.

Point well made -- I think it goes without saying that new material would have been much more exciting!

Few people love and respect Gerardo as a player, teacher, composer, and person as I do. I wasn't going to make much more issue about but I have to say a couple things, and it is not comfortable to say them honestly. First of all, you keep saying this is a "new work", there is nothing new about it at all. Further it is not a "best of" simply as we hear rehashed compositions, rather, it is what is left among his repertoire he can actually PLAY. A proper "best of" would include his beloved large body of fast Buleria compositions that are driven by his (now completely gone) devastating arpeggio technique. Sadly, I don't notice any change what so ever with his technique on this recording. It's the same as it was since 2010. I watched the decline first hand happen slowly since 2008. It is quite scary. To make things worse, certain media have proclaimed Nuñez performances that once were cold technique displays to have somehow upgraded to be "More flamenco" and more spirited than the past. This is nonsense. I admit his last album had new music and while revealed problems with his technique, actually contained new material that I found and still find inspiring. So for what it's worth, the latest offering is yet another "jazzpaña" type fusion of his old music, a side project collaboration. Hope he gets all new stuff together for the next recording.

Ricardo

I was so lucky back in 2006 that I got to see him perform material from Andando el Tiempo together with Jesús Mendez, Cepillo, Pablo Martín...it's still one of the best concerts I've ever seen, he was really at the top of his game then.

What you wrote was right on the nail. I dont think I could have expressed it any better myself.

Just to add that Im pretty sure that a future solo album will have more new composition. Before Travesia was released Gerardo was playing a lot of demo tracks in his garden, many of which did not make it onto the album. He laughed and said they would go on the next one

I'm glad I saw him in 2008. Someone posted a video of him playing live within the past year and I was shocked by how poorly he played.

Daniel, I didn't comment after listening to a few of the songs from this new release because I just wasn't impressed by it.

DaveRom, regarding Vicente amigo album, I saw a post on Facebook this week with a pic of him in the studio with Poveda recording.

For me personally, Even Andando el Tiempo did not capture me that much although I listened to it for months. Nothing compared to his earlier albums. But that can be said for most of the greats.

RE: Gerardo Nunez - Logos (in reply to Bulerias2005

Thanks for all the comments, guys. I am clearly not asking for agreement here, just a livelier discussion. I fully recognize that this isn't a quote-unquote "new" work -- by that I simply meant a new release. Yes, the relative lack of new material is disappointing. I have not read anything about Nunez's performances now being more emotional, but that's completely ridiculous and falls into the category of "that player is too technical, so he plays without emotion". Nunez was always a very technical AND emotional player... now sadly his technique is nowhere near where it once was. However, to me, the level of polish here is significantly higher than on Travesia. I am not solely referring to technical ability but also to mistakes and note buzzing and even the guitar being tuned (on the introduction of Travesia's opening track, Nunez's guitar is clearly NOT in tune which right away seemed to send a clear message... almost like he couldn't care enough even to tune his guitar properly).

I will agree that this is more a side project than a mainline release, but I've enjoyed Ulf's work for many years, so this collaboration was a pleasant surprise. That being said, I am not surprised that the reception isn't great -- this is predominantly old material, and again, it IS undeniably a side project. I too hope that Nunez's next album has new music.
