I think I know what you're talking about. This is an effect or tremolo played by either mimi or aiai (or maybe other combinations). It is an m strum down, i strum down, m strum up i strum up. If you practice it slow and stacatto (there's that word again), you can eventually find that you can play it very, very fast. It does sound like alternate picking, if you do it close to the bridge. Some guys I play with do it, but I've been too lazy to get it down. It's nice if you do rumba jams with other players because it can be powerful, and you can do it on several strings.

Hey, that's some good advice.

The next logical step is to play an entire piece with one finger.

I've just been trying to play the one-fingered "ironman" version of callejon de la luna. It's a real workout!

And on the topic... Do you practice one-finger scales? I used to play Segovia's scales using only i or m.
