I suppose that the new flamenco guys are following the track left by Paco who started contaminating flamenco with jazz- fusion.
Paco declared to have had a strong fascination for people like Marsalis and others.
Nowadays people like Josemi Carmona and others can be defined equally flamenco and jazz-fusion guitarists.
Interestingly fusion is a very wide genre and the kind of contamination Paco seemed to like more is very different from the Jazz flavour you find in the albums of Tomatito or Amigo. Tomatito is influenced by the south-American Jazz of Camilo while Amigo (or Antonio Rey) by Metheny.
Metheny is less jazzy and more musical than others.

Thanks anyway.

Oy... I loved Lara's first album but this one is just so flat-sounding. Why Metheny?... you'd think flamencos would be influenced by someone whose music is less saccharine (at least, the more recent stuff). That said, taken on their own merits, the arrangements are interesting. Just nothing flamenco about them.

If I can be permitted to hazard a guess...

From my admittedly limited exposure to Metheny (I only own 'Bright Size Life' and 'Trio 99-00'), I'd suspect that some of the chord progressions he comes up with and some of the voicings he uses appeal to people grounded in flamenco harmony.

Some of the titles in Stu's post are album titles ('Question and Answer' was the name of a comparatively straight-ahead jazz "standards" album Metheny recorded in the late 80s - I think 'Letter from Home' is an album title as well) - if you're going to reference the album titles or cover songs it makes a certain amount of sense to do so using the language of the original titles.

Responding to the posts that try to characterize Metheny, from what I can tell Metheny is like jazz guitar's answer to Neil Young (who I don't care for) in that he seems to operate in a few different modes, apparently dependent on what he feels like doing. There's "ECM Metheny," "straight-ahead jazz" Metheny, "mellow acoustic" Metheny, "harmolodic" Metheny and probably a few other musical personalities kicking around in there.

One of the few ecletic guys with a vast discography that influenced artists which I really like but whose music I don't really care for, no matter what the album or project is. I've tried a few times but it really does nothing for me.

I downloaded the album from Amazon USA.

07 - Letter from home --> stops working from 1:44 to the end
08 - The heat of the day --> doesn't work at all

Anyone having these issues?

Yeah, track one is also crapped out with artifacts.

I didn't care much because I don't plan to listen to this again. I just changed to De La Luz album and everything was much better.

Also, I hear a lot of clipping, particularly when Lara is playing. Who was in charge of the audio production on this one?...

A mate of mine who is a big jazz fan told me Metheny was once invited to become the third guitarist in the Guitar Trio and he turned them down 'cause it was too crazy for him.

No idea how true the story is, but if it is true then perhaps "Tribute to Metheney" is a way of saying thankyou for turning them down.

13th floor please.

That reminds me of the story of Keith Emerson rejecting Hendrix as a member of his new group, Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP) Arguably with Hendrix in the band it would have been laughed out of all the arenas...
