New Ninth Planet Discovered

A couple of Cal Tech astronomers have convincing evidence of a ninth planet in the solar system which would replace Pluto, downgraded to a "dwarf planet" in 2006. Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown (who downgraded Pluto) have inferred the existence of the ninth planet--Planet X--from the gravitational effects observed in six objects near its orbit, much as Neptune was discovered by the gravitational effect it had on the planet Uranus.

Although the planet itself has not been seen, it would take a planet with the mass of 10 Earths to shepherd the six objects into their strange elliptical orbits, tilted out of the plane of the solar system. The orbit of the inferred planet is similarly tilted, as well as stretched to distances that are seven times farther than Neptune from the sun. The ninth planet--Planet X--orbits the sun once every 15,000 years, so it is really far out there, although still part of our solar system. that this planet actually exists will only be confirmed if and when it is actually observed. But the evidence is pretty convincing.

Is a dwarf planet not a planet? Is a dwarf human not a human?

Anyways, pretty cool that all this prediction comes out of some pretty intense mathematics. Of course calculating their amazingly low probability of being wrong is completely model dependant, they could be wrong, only time will tell...

well i still think Pluto is a planet ... it functions as one and to downgrade it is just being mean ...and its Mickey mouses dog..

based on ....it would take a planet with the mass of 10 Earths to shepherd the six objects into their strange elliptical orbits,

they can find the 6 tiny objects but not the massive 10 times the size of the earth object .. and nowadays they can identify planets around other suns and tiny things that happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away......

Fat chance of being right ,,,, I say ...

Pluto will always be a planet in my book, too. And if "Planet X" is observed and confirmed, it will be our solar system's tenth planet in my book as well. Cal Tech astronomers have no business upending my primary schooling of 60 years ago!

Got to admit I do like the name Planet X ....I think they should keep that ...and anyway quite a lot is already known about the inhabitants .....
I was just chatting with one the other day ....

The trouble is, it’s now known that there are zillions of objects just like Pluto in the Kuiper Belt. I guess downgrading Pluto saved coming up with several thousand new planet names…

Apparently the discoverers call it “Fatty”.

Looks like North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's retarded brother, or is it the other way around?

Shouldn't it be Planet IX?

BTW, Derek Sherinian must have the rights on that one already: http://www.xplanetx.com/the-band/

The thrill of watching a planet that can´t even be hosting a bacteria!
And that from earth where lousy creatures like tigers, whales and the shabby rest are going exctinct, because of some 1800 lunatic apes not feeling content yet with owning some 80% or so of their planet.

BTW, how is capital rated in astronomy? As immaterial Black Hole, insanity dimension, raging vacuum or what?

Newton, who made important contributions to astronomy, rated capital pretty highly.
