RE: Vicente Amigo New Album in Spring (in reply to Guest

Vicente is right up there with PDL, Sabicas, and especially Antonio Rey. Of course, it's hard to compare anyone to Sabicas or PDL because they were "the all" of flamenco guitar at their time. But if anyone has carried Paco's torch of continuing extreme fusions with other genres, then Vicente is it. He does it with taste and grace. Calling those experiments and fusions "elevator music" is quite closed minded IMO. What would flamenco be if Paco hadn't experimented and fused musical genres?

I no doubt overstated my case when I referred to it as "elevator music," Shroomy. I take that phrase back. Nevertheless, I stand by my overall rating of Vicente. I do not consider him as great a force in flamenco as Sabicas and Paco de Lucia were in there respective eras. Compared to past greats, I consider Vicente second tier. I'm not saying he's bad; just that he does not come up to their level, in my opinion.

Regarding "fusion," I have stated here before and I will state it again, I am not a great fan of fusion, either in music or food! I began to lose interest in PDL when he added a bass guitar and a harmonica to his group. I know, I know, it was still flamenco, but it was not a flamenco that appealed to me. Over the last several years, there have been attempts at "fusion" of various cuisines, such as Latin American (usually Mexican or Salvadoran) and Chinese. In Arlington, Virginia (near Washington, DC) a few years ago there was even a restaurant that billed itself as featuring Bolivian and Chinese cuisine! Having tried several of these attempts at "fusion," my conclusion is that it more often than not results in a mediocre product, diminishing the best of both cuisines.

Such "fusion" in music can result in interesting combinations, but it can result in mediocrity as well. I think the attempts at "fusion flamenco" result in the latter. But that is just my opinion for what it is worth. And what it is worth probably would not buy you a cup of coffee and a croissant.

In any case, let's see what he comes up with on his latest album this spring. Perhaps it will change my mind. Or perhaps he will disappoint his most ardent admirers (admittedly, not likely). We'll just have to see what he does with it.

Bill

You can have that opinion but only if you've actually listened (and given it an honest try) to most of Vicente's discography. If you haven't, you are giving a premature opinion. I doubt that you have, if you are stating this opinion.

I respect your opinion of Vicente, Shroomy, but the logical fallacy in your statement quoted above is its implication that if I don't consider Vicente top tier along with PDL, Sabicas, and other greats of the past, and more importantly, if I don't share your level of appreciation for him, by definition I must not have listened to much of Vicente's discography. In other words, to disagree with your assessment is to indicate a lack of appreciation and understanding of the subject under consideration. If you wish to cling to that fallacy that is your choice, but I assure you you are wrong.

Unanimously?! Sounds like you are taking a page from the old Soviet Union and the party line that Socialist-Realism was the only worthy art, and to stray from the party line was to exhibit deviant tendencies. I never expected you to take a Leninist party line that everyone should "unanimously" agree on anything.

Bill, I think Paco de Lucia and Antonio Rey would both disagree with your assessment of Vicente Amigo. He is full of genius, both as a composer and a performer. A true musician. And he definitely made an impact on the way flamenco is played today.

You are of course entitled to your opinion. It's just that I can't see a single thing in Vicente's artistry that is not first rate.

I'm definitely in the minority (a minority of one?), Grisha. We can all disagree with good cheer, but I think I will leave it at that and not bore fellow Foro members any further. As I commented above, let's see what his new album is like when it is released this spring.

Cheers,

Bill

I love many a Flamenco guitarist, including the author of these words I quoted, but -considering the important role that playing guitar serves in my life- Vicente Amigo alone managed to change my life, ignited my passion for flamenco and excited me to (try to) play it.

There are a few critical moments in the history of music, and pivotal musicians who are instrumental to the revolution those moments brew... Like Paco de Lucia, Vicente is one such revolutionary musician.

Liking or enjoying a musician's work is different from objectively appreciating and recognizing his/her importance. And it would be insulting the history of music, flamenco and guitar to dismiss Vicente Amigo's role.

I will see him in San Francisco in March and hope to shake his hand while pompously reciting this post in a creditable Spanish:

Hay algunos momentos críticos en la historia de la música y músicos fundamentales para la revolución esos momentos pueden traer ... como Paco de Lucía, Vicente es uno de esos músicos revolucionarios

Shroomy, I did not say I didn't like him. I said that I do not consider him in the same top category as most of those you mentioned above. I can still listen to him and enjoy him, just as I attend performances by Paco Pena and enjoy him, although I don't consider Paco Pena in the same top tier as Sabicas and PDL either. Nevertheless, I do favor Paco Pena's more traditional approach. I began to lose interest in Paco de Lucia, however, when he added basses and harmonicas to his group. It may be odd, but there it is.

Giacomo, glad that if nothing else, this discussion drew you out of your long dormant position on the Foro. Two or three weeks ago we had a thread on Foro members who no longer contribute and are missed, and I mentioned you as one whose wise thoughts and observations have long been absent. Perhaps we will hear more from you in the future?

Thank you, Bill. You know well the sentiment is absolutely mutual.

I see the foro old guard on FaceBook (aren't you there?) but I miss this place. I resumed practicing and playing steadily, and am excited to also resume contributing here. I owe a lot to foroflamenco, I learned so much and connected with some wonderful people.

It wasn't on amazon yet then, but couple of days later saw it

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Memoria-los-Sentidos-Vicente-Amigo/dp/B01N7KO6LT/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1485976799&sr=1-1&keywords=vicente+amigo+memoria+de+los+sentidos

also seen it for sale on ebay, a bit cheaper than amazon, but I might wait a bit and see if the price goes down when it is actually released....

RE: Vicente Amigo New Album in Spring (in reply to mark indigo

It's his "Signature Guitar" built by Francisco Navarro. Navarro makes a Reyes model based on the plans Tom Blackshear drew after closely inspecting a 2003 Reyes.

Vicente's guitar is basically Navarro's Grand Concert Reyes model with a headstock designed by Vicente himself and some little tweaks (which have more to do with nut width and bridge measurements than anything else from what I have gathered).

Vicente was supposed to be taking delivery of a run of 250 guitars (that were going to be sold by him) from Navarro around the time Tierra came out. There's a link on his website about these guitars (where no details are given, just a form to fill in order to get more info about them). Not sure as to what happened to these guitars. I personally do not know anyone who bought one (might have been the steep €4000 asked for them, when a Navarro Grand Concert Reyes is at around €3000) and you never see them on the second hand market either.

Vicente might be trying to revive interest in these guitars by making an appearance with one on the new album's cover.

What? I thought he was going back to the roots and playing sabicas lol. I hear a mixture of ideas from previous albums in that rumba. And a hint of paco in the solo section. None the less, I will definitely look forward to getting the album.

According to Vicente he hasn't recorded with his Reyes Blanca in the past couple of albums - mostly Lester Devoe guitars, and G.Perez. I could totally see him promoting his guitar line with this album though.

great recording quality, very typical Vicente so I suppose he's going back to his traditional style compared to previous album(which is great)

Potito is as good as ever, some tasty "chops" from Vicente also! Looking forward to it!
