Squash Tournament of Champions in Ne...

I don't know if there are any squash players on the Foro, but I love squash and have been playing for decades. I have been in New York the last three days attending the semi-finals and finals of the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions, with an all-glass squash court set up in Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal. I come to New York every year to see the semi-finals and finals of this tournament, which is among the top four or five squash tournaments in the world.

The finals were held last evening, and it was terrific squash. In the women's final Nour El Sherbini (Egypt) defeated Amanda Sobhy (USA) three games to one. In the men's final Mohammed El Shorbagy (Egypt) defeated Nick Mathew (UK) three games to two. So Egypt reigns in the Tournament of Champions this year. As I said, great squash.

Agreed. Whatever her ethnic background, she is a U.S. citizen, went to Harvard, and captained the Harvard girl's squash team. Excellent player and has come up fast in pro squash. But the Egyptians now rule squash, much like the Pakistanis did for about 20 years during the '80s and '90s.

But the real test of hard-wired genes is, having drunk the bottle of Jameson, can you score a win on the squash court with drop shots at the front wall which your opponent cannot reach?

I love squash. A few months ago we removed some seeds from a squash someone gave us and planted them at the back of the house. The stuff grows rampantly across the garden in all directions, sending out pretty orange flowers that turn into yummy edible fruits. Our #1 was a good size, #2 and #3 quite small because the plant died off around them. But the champion is #4 who is still growing strong.

Judging from the photo, Dudnote, they would never qualify for tournament-level play. They lack symmetry and don't have the spherical shape required to take advantage of the racquet's "sweet spot." Moreover, you would have a very difficult time hitting a "boast" shot off the side wall ending in a corner drop at the front wall.

My advice would be hollow them out and let them dry into gourds, at which time you turn them into Mexican-style maracas to be played along side your flamenco guitar, thus creating a new form of Guadeloupe-inspired "fusion" flamenco.

Hadn't thought of maracas. The traditional Guadeloupian maracas or shaker is usually made with the fruit of Crescentia cujete, but it could be funny to try with squash. Flamen-Ka would definitely be a cool name for a fusion band, but traditionalists don't really like all these modern fusions with instruments like guitars entering into their music - the "Ka" (tambour) is sacred here. The fusion could be great though if they had Ricardo and not Dudnote knocking out bulerias on the street corners
