Good to hear all your opinions. More uploads, less off topic stuff! The fork is a cool place so let's keep it that way

What I really miss are aficionados who know more about cante' than I do talking about and arguing and rating singers. And getting into genealogies and letras. I make guitars, but I don't find that aspect of flamenco as satisfying on a website without more talk about cante'. Most flamenco talk is guitar-o-centric, but afcionados that have a lot of knowledge about older cante' are harder to find.

Actually, flamenco-related discussions, uploads, etc. and off-topic discussions are not mutually exclusive. It is not a zero-sum game where more of one means less of the other. I like the fact that there are members of the Foro who enjoy and engage in flamenco-related discussions and activity, yet have a variety of other interests which they discuss in the off-topic section.

Ricardo always has something important to post on flamenco topics, and he is equally interesting to read when he posts comments on physics, the cosmos, and science in general in the off-topic section. Likewise with Richard and Stephen, whether its science and logic or politics and international relations. Or the blues and other musical genres for that matter. Those members who post in both the flamenco-related topic sections and the off-topic section display a breadth of interests that add to the Foro. And anyone who wishes to upload may do so at any time. We all appreciate that.

Yeah, somehow seems to be more general bickering going on, and less flamenco.
when I joined in 2007 I was kinda shocked by the level of pointless personal bickering and bitching. I don't think there is more of that and less flamenco, I think there is less of both currently.

RE: Where has everyone gone? (in reply to Guest

I think a lot of people these days have internet fatigue, the internet is not so novel any longer. I was just thinking about the first time I used the internet, it was in 1990 in Alexandria Virginia, ( just after Al Gore famously invented it..) It was what 25 years ago, then the first flamenco chat site popped up about 1996-97 there were epic battles on the Temple list.

Ricardo disagrees with me, but I found it interesting, it was fresh and there were all these older seasoned afcionados arguing and joking. It also had a great deal of flak shooting, off topic subjects like cooking and arguments over cooking etc. And trolls, and nasty people. I found it very stimulating and I learned a lot, or I learned about new subjects and I asked my older friends about topics I had read about. I think the ratio of BS to substance was about the same as today, but the substance was more cante oriented.

I still find a great deal of the off topic subject interesting, finding out other peoples interests outside flamenco. I think that main difference is the shift from the core of discussion being about cante' to guitar playing. The guitar talk is intense and there's a lot of it.

It's not the same thing as here. Just realized today that I can no longer upload pics from my ipod iphone library as I have been doing for years. (EDIT....suddenly worked after I resized my pic sorry, but can't upload it in the luthiery section for some reason). This plus not being able to embed youtube links makes posting media on foro not as convenient. Wonder if there is anything can be done to revamp things for mobile devices, or at least a tutorial of ways around problem?

John's point is that recently it seems exactly like that zero sum game - and I agree. You just have to tally up the number of music uploads vs off topic posts to see that that is exactly what is happening.

But let's not argue about it, join the winter challenge. So far it's just Lenny and me. I know the intro post might look long and intimidating, but basically the challenge is just to record some bulerias, upload it and record some more and up load that and do as much as that as you can between now and February.

Uthemus, it would be very cool if you would embrace the virtual juerga that is the winter bulerias challenge. The whole thing has been put together to encourage more uploading. Sign up mate, the more the merrier.

The term "zero sum" means that more of one necessarily means less of the other. That clearly is not the case here. If there are fewer music uploads, and I take your word that there are, it is not because of the number of off-topic posts. It is because members are simply posting fewer uploads. The number of off-topic posts does not affect anyone's ability to upload if they want to. Fewer off-topic posts will not remedy that situation. More people deciding to upload will.

I won't be joining the winter challenge, too many people complained about my recording equipment, or lack there of. LOL

Thus confirming Sr. Martins' earlier observation that this has become "ForoQuejío."

You'll be fine on the challenge thread Stephen, it's the quietest thread on the foro right now, just Lenny rapping on a table whilst moaning "ay ay ay" and me struggling to work out what chords to play to a chorus of frogs. So far we've not been busted by the police

The last time I saw Paco de Lucia perform, he had a bass guitar and a harmonica in his group. Could I join the challenge if I play a kazoo?

To the question: If the number of entertaining people gets lower, the number of active foro contributors follows. :/

I would have continued to share my incredible wisdom with you guys, but my life isn't that easy lately... sorry for not making you guys upset since ~2014 haha :P

It's a fairly recent phenomenon, the Foro declining to the point where I don't visit much, and a temporary one I hope. It's only happened this year really.

A few wackier theories- the death of Paco de Lucia has damaged the Flamenco community I think- losing the figurehead has left people feeling a bit directionless. There is in my opinion a bit of a lack of genuinely great new music at the moment. Antonio Rey's music is a bit cloying (though his playing is wonderful), Vicente Amigo has gone even further into elevator music mode, Diego Morao's playing is great but the really classic melodies aren't there yet. I think Miguel Poveda is the brightest spark right now.

Also, the world has felt a bit grim lately- terrorist attacks, Syria, Russia and Ukraine, and we are far more conscious of these issues with the rise of social media. It makes discussion of lighter topics like music a bit more difficult I think when the internet is dominated by politics and world affairs.

YES!! agreed

I think the facebook argument has to hold the most sway. It's grown dramatically in even the last five years. I remember coming back to the foro after a while and found myself yearning for a "like" button .....so I could just click like when someone made a decent point. (does that promote laziness? just click like, no need to actually converse with people )

I think the Paco death argument is utter rubbbish btw.

Was discussed quite recently. I was one of few who opposed the idea. But have changed my mind, would save lots of posts just saying "Ole".

Simon wasn't closed to the possibility either.
