Visual first impression. Pictures are not always the best way to make a decision. I have an old guitar made from birch and painted to look like Brazilian rosewood, it could fool most people.

Ha ha. Birch can be so beautifull. My little harp has its box made of birch. But I prefer it natural. Actually, I´m not a big fan of dark woods myself.
With respect of rosewoods, IMHO only the smell when heated or sanded give you AN IDEA of what it is. And only if you have the experience to recognize the smell, of course.
The differents rosewoods have different smells. Indian rosewood is very nice, so is Brazz. Madagascar and Panama has a very distinct kind of sharp smell. ETC.
