WTB: Vintage Gibson & Fender electri...

I wonder if it's OK to post this here but in case there are Flamenco guitarists on the foro who have some vintage electrics laying around without use I am interested to purchase original vintage fender&gibson electrics for a good price. Thanks

Fine by me, though I have moved it to Off Topic in case it generates replies that I have to approve and will more likely be a conversation.

I have several newer guitars that have I have breathed on in terms of setup and configuration. Vintage Fenders and Gibson's are very over-priced in the UK and the best known are not very good guitars, especially those from the 70s.

Les Paul Junior double cutaway and Melody Maker from the 60s seem more reachable and SGs are probably a little undervalued.

Though clueless in regard of gear and electronics, this is my impression too in respect of construction and prices.
What I came across, specially from Fender, used to be incredibly heavy and chunky old duds. (Responsive like a piece of stone.)

Albeit, saying so on another forum, I received comments from others who confirmed that such duds used to be made, however, that elegant, light and highly resonant specimens used to be built as well.

Personally, I had my lucky strike in a second-hand store once, with a strat from Yamaha. Slim, light and vibrating from top to bottom. The gear works well, and I was missing nothing tone wise with its pickups. Although, no doubt that geeks would be knowing how to improve it with better electronics.

Curious about why the 70's as well. Most of those are not sought after. 50's and early 60's most definitely. Most strat guys won't touch the CBS era big headstocks so there are plenty to be had at low prices all over the place.

I meant that they are not very good guitars from the 70s. Don't know why, but Strat prices have been too high from that era. I'll try and find some examples around here.

I posted a pic before of the 64 strat I had, regretting the day I sold it, but the reason I sold it was because I had a '76 strat that played better and sounded better. I still have it, and it's probably worth about 2k. The '64 probably 25k. One you get over 10k for vintage Gibsons and fenders, you are paying strictly for pedigree, as these instruments don't provide that much value in terms of playability or sound IMO. As investments, they could continue to provide a good return. Who knows what a '58 les paul will sell for in 20 years? Maybe a few million bucks.

I support that statement. Once, I owned a 1975 CBS era Stratocaster. It was horrible! The lousy fretwork cause flat notes in different spots. The maple neck was so soft, you had to be careful not to put too much pressure on it. The body was dipped in plastic to build the body up to a uniform shape. CBS cost cutting low quality was no myth!

Yes most vintage guitars are definately overpriced and many aren't even comfortable to play...

However there are some great guitars out there. Maybe someone has one for sale here?

Wish I could help you out. I'm a few years too late there. You see, I also once owned a 1955 Stratocaster. In 1973 like the fool that I am, I sold it to a friend for I could buy the above mentioned 1975 Strat. My friend while playing gigs in New Mexico sold it to country star Michael Martin Murphey for 20 grand in the early '90's. He really needed the money bad and was on a waiting list for a liver transplant. He didn't have health insurance. He died during the wait.
He was a better guitarist than I, too. Because of it all, I rest assured the guitar might helped him out in more ways than one.

There are a lot of makers out there doing vintage Fender and vintage Gibson spec better than either company can do themselves currently (Gil Yaron, and Johan Gustavsson immediately come to mind).

Take a look at those makers. Johan has a stash of old growth mahogany he uses on his bluesmasters that rivals anything you could dig up on a '59 burst. Instead of 100k+ for a guitar you'll only need about 9k to pick one up used.

In 65 CBS bought Fender. Quality went down, down. A vintage Fender is pre CBS 65 or before. The 70s were often bad. Modern Fenders are better. Search the net if you want to know more.

Lots of better guitars out there, cheap. My 300 euros Melody Maker, with Fender Tele and DiMarzio pickups would wipe out many of the magic vintages.
