What is the difference between maple...

I have right now quarter sawn sycamore for the coming blanca,I've searched online and found that English sycamore is the european maple in the shape of the grain and typical to the pieces I have, are they the same thing but with different names?

Nobody puts sycamore syrup on their pancakes - so theoretically maple should have a sweeter sound. Other than that, can't help you much.

That's pretty funny.

Maple and sycamore, look at the taxonomic names. There are some type's of Maple called Sycamore. You have to parse out which is true Maple and which is sycamore. For example there's a wood commonly known as English Sycamore, but it is a kind of Maple.

If you mean for sound, probably not much difference. Maple to me has a kind of neutral sound, it seems not to color the soundboard too much in any direction to me. Maple seems to have a kind of clarity, I think.

The stuff called English Sycamore is a very light wood, but Rock maple from North America is very hard.....two really different kinds of neutral.

No, but theoretically one could be sick of more pancakes.

Ahmed: They are totally different trees and woods. Though both kinds of wood are blonde in color.

The difference puzzled me at first too. Hard for non native english speakers to get around these regional differences.
Basically there are two different trees, from different genera: Acer pseudoplatanus and Platanus ssp.

North americans call their plane (Platanus occidentalis) sycamore, and Acer pseudoplatanus Norway Maple.
Brits refer to "their" Platanus x acerifolia (which is an hybrid of the american and turkish plane, which occured probably in a botanical garden in Spain) as London plane and call sycamore to A. pseudoplatanus.

Even their latin names bear this similarity as pseudoplatanus means false plane and acerifolia means maple-like leaves. Wood is different, though, specially if dead on quarter - Platanus species exibit much wider ray fleck; Acer pseudolatanus is whiter. Texture is similar.

So sycamore = Plane in the US, Maple in th UK.

That's helpful to explain a few things. Thankyou.

Acer Psuedoplatanus; the English Sycamore is also known as European Maple and its density is typically around 650kg per cubic metre. Cypress is about 450 and indian Rosewood is typically about 750.
So, although Sycamore is a good substitute for Cypress in terms of appearance, its actually closer to Rosewood in density. More negra than blanca despite its pale good looks.

Sweden has given us many things, two of which stand out: Swedish stewardesses and Carl Linnaeus. The former we all know from old television shows and movies and the latter we all should know as he is the father of taxonomy. I figure since Mr. Linnaeus worked his butt off to give us a system of nomenclature we should put his work into practice. Sycamore is a good example where binomial taxonomy is worth its' weight in gold.

Can´t let that one go without adding that Lufthansa girls weren´t exactly ugly either, back then when the company used to pick their stewardess applicants by shape, obviously.
Quite some eye candy whether of maple or rosewood hair shade!

Disagree.
Depends on where its from. As its already been said, acer pseudoplatanus has 2 popular names. English sycamore and European maple. Its the wood used for building violins, cellos etc and the wood most european guitar makers use for maple guitars.

American maple and sycamore is a different thing.

This is yet another example where popular names confuse more than the explain.
