Famous Bulerias from Sabicas

Hi,

does anybody know if Tabs exist for the famous Bulerias from Sabicas which is played by Grisha here:

This sounds like the bulería «Andrés Heredia», which is from the double album El Duende de la Guitarra.

Unfortunately I’m not aware of any transcription, not even by Alain Faucher (who goes from Amenecer árabe to Arabesca)

I was browsing this website and I found it by chance. I think this is the one you're looking for. It is not a complete nor very accurate tab but it gets you in the ballpark.

On the album "Flamenco Puro" this track is called "Aires de Triana (Bulerias)" it starts at 32:40 on this Youtube upload

I know it, in conventional musical notation from Joseph Trotter's transcription "Flamenco Puro" here. It starts on page 39.

This has long been out of print, but you might come across a copy somewhere.

I have it in TAB in "Sabicas Volumen 2 Temas Flamencos" Jose Fuente, Play Music Publishing, 2012.

Here, in the time honored tradition of mixing up the names of Sabicas tracks, it is labeled "Ecos Jerezanos."

The Spanish Shop ElFlamencoVive, which has been reliable in the few dealings I have had with them, seems to imply here

that "jose Fuente" is really the well known flamenco scholar and transcriber Claude Worms.

I've been listening to those 2 pieces, Aires de Triana and Ecos Jerezanos, and they are not the same. They have some falsetas in common though. They are missing the theme that starts around 1:00. But maybe I'm just focusing in a small segment and not the whole thing.

Maybe Grisha can help us out!

Sorry, learned everything by ear. This particular one I learned from a damaged reel-to-reel tape in the late 80-s, so it's full of errors.

It appears on more than one album. I have it on this CD:

Paul, that's what I meant to say. That neither of those 2 pieces is what Grisha was playing. Btw, I noticed your review on Amazon stating that this CD is pretty much the same as Flamenco Fantasy LP.

Ooops! How embarrassing!

Clearly, Aires de Triana is not what Grisha is playing in the clip at the top of the page, though they may share a couple of falsetas. I thought I had seen Grisha playing Aires de Triana on Youtube, and simply assumed that's what was in the clip at the top of the page, but I can't find it on Youtube now.

oli, you might want to check out juan martin's bulerias de sabicas in his solo flamencos volume 2 book with dvd. it is not the exact piece but has many components of the bulerias in question.

Well, Grisha, I don’t of course know what’s on your copy of Flamenco Fantasy; but on mine the contents are as follows:

a1) Tarantas «Dolor gitano»
a2) Serranas «Sentimento»
a3) Malagueñas «El pillallo»
a4) Farruca «La Farruca de las tres Guitarras»
a5) Granadinas «Patio de los leones»

b1) Alegrías «Puerto Santa María»
b2) Rondeña «Llanto Minero»
b3) Fandangos «Jardines de Huelva»
b4) Siguiriyas «Apregonao me tienes»
b5) Bulerías «Rumbo a la fiesta»

which is the same as tracks 3–12 of Concierto.

I never got around around to identifying the provenance of the remaining tracks (running down Sabicas pieces without titles is too much like hard work, there are so many of them.)

Sabicas has to be one of the most abused artists when it comes to his albums. I have seen the same pieces, in the same order, marketed under several titles. I have seen his pieces mixed in with other artists and sold as a compilation--this does not include the Masters of Flamenco series. I have a couple of his CDs with obvious errors in the titles and/or order of pieces.

Sadly, Sabicas was not overly concerned with the business end of the record business. There are stories, and even album liner notes, reporting how he came into the studio, played pieces, took his money and then left; no paperwork done to save his legacy for his beneficiaries--at least financially. Too bad there was no flamenco Peter Grant around to manage his career.

I couldn’t agree more. Apparently he didn’t believe in royalties, and always wanted cash down. What this must have cost him in the long run is frightening.

(Perhaps this attitude was formed in Spain, when there was no one to protect Gypsies’ legal rights?)

As to the state of things now, the worst album in this respect seems to be The Art of the Guitar, which is now marketed under titles running into double digits. Can it had gone into the public domain?

Add to that the stuff from the ’60s and ’70s passed off as from the ’40s…

P.S. The errors in the titles and/or order of pieces were often on the original LPs, and of course no one bothers to check them when the CDs are released (if they even have anyone competent to do so).
