Hey,

This search should help:
http://www.skyscanner.net/transport/flights/man/grx/150816/150821/airfares-from-manchester-to-granada-in-august-2015.html?adults=1&children=0&infants=0&cabinclass=economy&rtn=1&preferdirects=false&outboundaltsenabled=true&inboundaltsenabled=true

Shows nearby airports (Assuming the link works). Malaga seems to be your best bet, I did that drive from granada to malaga and it was quite quick if I recall.

Here's a web page that addresses your question.

http://www.granadainfo.com/granadatravel.htm

I note that British Airways operates a flight several times a week from London City Airport to the Granada airport.

Otherwise, quickest choice seems to be fly into Malaga, take the bus to Granada.

Last time I was in Granada I took the train from Madrid--it's about 5 hours, or 4 hours from Sevilla. A few years ago we flew to Jerez, rented a car and drove to Granada. It's about a 3 hour drive through scenic country with little traffic.

Without doubt, this is the best way to travel to Granada, from the UK.

Rafapak, I hope your search goes well. Plenty of guitars in Granada. You should be able to find what you want there, if you are careful.

From the northwest of England it's better to go to Malaga, (cheaper, quicker and more choice)
It's only about an hour (ish) easy driving from Malaga to Granada.
there are luthiers in Malaga too, so don't miss them in a rush to get to Granada.

Good luck

Granada airport has very few flights from the UK now and most are from london.
From the north of England there are many flights for example from Manchester to Malaga. Malaga to Granada is about 1 hour 40 minutes drive. Its about 2 hours on the bus. The motorway from the Granada coast (Almuñecar) to granada has been finished this year so you can get from the coast to Granada in about 45 minutes.

The advantage of Granada airport is that it is very small and only a 15 minute taxi journey from Granada city. I dont recommend anyone driving around Granada unless you absolutely have to...its a crazy labyrinth.

The first time I was in Granada was a while ago. Franco was not only alive, he was still quite active. I drove from Malaga. Even back then the city was a terrible place to drive. Somehow I managed to wander into the Albaicin and found myself on one-way streets barely wide enough for the tiny Seat Panda I was driving. On my way out of town I saw a vacant space at the curb with a mailbox. I pulled up to drop off some postcards.

A uniformed member of the Guardia Civil stormed out of the building with a stern expression, holding up his palm to deter a criminal parking offense. Then he saw I was a tourist, took my postcards through the car window, ceremoniously deposited them in the mailbox, and sent me on my way with a salute.

When Larisa and I were in Granada in 2007 we stayed at a small hotel almost under the walls of the Alhambra. Larisa drove from Jerez to Granada. There is a bypass that takes you from the highway to the Alhambra while pretty much avoiding the city. We found the hotel with little trouble, though there were a couple of very tight squeezes getting to it. We left parking the car to the hotel's owner. We were afraid to try.

I actually drove in Granada the last time I was there three or four years ago. I rented a car at the train station and drove south into the Alpujarras to visit Estevan and his wife at a tiny village, literally at the end of the road. I had no trouble getting out of town onto the motorway, but coming back into town I took a wrong turn and wandered in heavy traffic for at least half an hour, even with GPS on my iPad.

We stayed at the Alhambra Palace Hotel in this area December 2014.
We drove to Granada from Seville in our own car (UK registered right hand drive) and took what I think was the same route as Richard and Larisa...bypass from highway to Alhambra . Really easy way in....very little traffic and all parking sorted by the hotel staff as was Richards experience.
We just walked everywhere after this. Brilliant experience, wonderful place.
All the travelling we did in Spain last year was under our own steam in our family car. Had very little trouble....a little snow....!! but all very straight forward.
We will go again.....few years away but have decided to go from London by sleeper train. The saving has begun!!!

Best

We stayed quite near the Alhambra Hotel, at the Carmen de la Alcubilla del Caracol. The building dates back to Moorish times. The hotel has maybe nine rooms. The owner made toasted bolillos with tomato sauce, coffee and fresh orange juice for us for breakfast.

The Carmen is on a tiny street connected to the parking lot of the Alhambra by a short flight of steps. To get a car down there takes some strenuous back and forth maneuvering around sharp corners on a very narrow street with a steep dropoff on one side.

Another much longer flight of steps takes you down the hill, coming out near the plaza at the foot of the Cuesta de Gomerez, with the statue of Columbus and Isabela--or with a good deal of heavy breathing, the same steps take you back up to the Carmen.

This photo from the Carmen's web site happens to show the view from our room. The reddish turret at the top of the photo is part of the Alhambra Hotel.

I ended a couple of late nights out on the patio with a Cohiba and a glass of Hennessy VSOP. Larisa preferred Cardenal Mendoza....

Sevilla and Malaga airports are very good choices, Sevilla is a two and a half hour drive maybe only worth it if you get an excellent price on your flight. Buses are quite frequenttle t especially from Malaga. Granada is great, baggage usually takes very little time to follow you off the plane and a bus to the city meets every flight. It drops you off at a few points downtown as opposed to the Malaga or Sevilla bus which stop only at the bus station on the edge of town. Of course you have to find your way from the Malaga airport to the Malaga bus station too. Good luck.

we've stayed in many places in Granada, including the Parador de San Francisco inside the Alhambra grounds, which is a lovely romantic place to stay (especially the old part), and is great to have a gin & tonic on the terrace on a scorching afternoon.
its not so nice at 2 in the morning after belly full of wine and tapas trying to climb up the hill :)
we are going to Spain again next week for a couple of weeks, for our last week we are staying in the Carmen de los Moriscos high in the Albaicin

its a lovely view from the apartment

One of the best views anywhere. There's a restaurant just across the street downhill from the Plaza San Nicolas with the same view, only a little closer. Or you can sit on the wall at the downhill side of the Plaza for free.

malaga to granada bus takes around 3 hours and is quite comfortable. Taxi would cost around 150 euros

Aaackk - enough with the photos, you are driving me nuts! Hopefully though, we will be back there for a week or so next May.

I've attached the view from our deck that we had for 6 months in 2010. Those who know Realejo may be able to figure out where this was.

Back on topic - Vueling flights from Barcelona to Granada are dirt cheap, and almost any airline can get you to Barcelona. As far as I know, there aren't any comparably cheap flights from Madrid to Granada.

This wonderful little hotel has the advantage of being literally next-door to the Alhambra within the walls ... We've been there twice, and were enchanted.

This photo is from their WEB SITE
