playing and soloing with a pick- cut... 
hi guys

I think for somebody who plays a lot with a pick and does single not soloing it is probably better idea to buy flamenco guitar with a cutaway ( strunz and farah do them ) but first flamenco guitars with cutaway are rare and second people say guitars without cutaway sound better. I wonder what are your opinions about this matter. Please, comment.

You don't play flamenco with a pick. I can only think of one guy who was brilliant at it

i know two guys like that , me and your guy ! just kidding, please write few comments about whether it is good idea or not to sacrifice tone for cutaway?

What music do you want to play? If you want to play world music like Strunz and Farah (not flamenco) and you play with a pick, get a cutaway it will be much more comfortable for lead runs up the neck. You won't notice any difference in tone because you aren't playing flamenco.

If you wanted to play flamenco on a cutaway I would be advising against unless you were buying a luthier guitar. I have played lots of (factory) cutaways and always found their acoustic tone lacking. The cutaways I have liked the sound of were hand made - one by a luthier on this forum (played by Jason McGuire) and also Jose Tanaka's guitar.

I am guessing from your other posts you are in the entry level market (though you still haven't said your budget) and there's lots of choice - Yamaha, Cordoba, Camps, Raimundo and others make cutaway flamencos usually with pick up systems.

thanks for replies, yes Blondie, i am on entry level market, my budget is 1000 pounds, i don't play regular flamenco for it is very difficult. still i want to learn rumba strumming techniques so that i can play simple gypsy kings songs etc

GKs are very, very good at Rumba "strumming". It's not that easy either, but good luck.

He has often has good cutaways from Paracho at reasonable prices. He'll ship you one. he's dependable.

Later if you decide to do more flamenco work without a pick you can still use the cutaway to learn rasgueado.

But before you buy a cutaway, you seem to be interested in flamenco, and you came here to a flamenco website. You mention Strunz and Farrah. Why not buy some music first instead of buying a guitar? May I make a suggestion that might change your music life?

Ok, check out some of the guitar players who play for singers and buy a few CD's or get something on iTunes first. Then listen to cante with guitar and an open mind for a few weeks an see if anything grabs you. If it does you might want to rethink your need for a cutaway, and worst thing that can happen is you postpone spending money on a guitar.

What do you think about that?

It's commonly thought that cutaways have "less sound" than full body guitars. It's not always the case. Often factory made cutaways have a lacking quality, but a good hand made cutaway will not sound different and I doubt in a true blind test that even good guitar makers or expert players could hear a difference.

The mythology persists nonetheless.
