Sky arts 'Guitar Star' competition

So there is one of these TV talent show contests happening for guitarists in the UK at the moment. This guy caught my eye- at the end he informs us that a couple of years ago he met his idol Manitas de Plata, who he says 'chose me to carry on the Flamenco spirit- a huge honour!'. Bizzare.

What a tragic mistake in picking a guitarist to emulate. That's one of those things you look back on at some point and say to yourself "What the hell was I thinking?"

it would be great if they had somebody on the show that can play the guitar.

Actually, there was a jazz guy that had some chops, but other than that,
whew, painful.

Rodrigo y Gabriella are judges, so.... yikes...

Well don't blame the players blame the judges. There were 1000 applications to the show, there were quite a few good ones and the semi finalists weren't bad, maybe not masters but hey it's a show. Before calling person unable to play the guitar, I would like to see you do better.

None of the links work for me... I don't have much more time to investigate other than this clip I scanned, but these kids are not horrible:

http://youtu.be/A6v5253Jk10

I also want to say "guitar star" as a tv show I heard about back in 2009 by my friend the (infamous?) dr. Whitehead as a serious idea he was personally pitching to some important people in Hollywood ... From my view it looks like someone stole his idea but I guess the idea is not super unique

Yes, the idea that these people "can't play the guitar" just smacks of jealousy.

Good entertaining show, interesting to see Paco Pena's advice in the semi-finals episode (episode 7 if you're downloading them)- teaching someone the Solea compas!

I'm sure he's a great player. But.. that 13 year old kid with great metal chops who competently records a record with a world class producer can "play the guitar". They aren't mutually exclusive!

I think Ricardo's comment that "ToddK is one of the best players on the Foro, no joke," was in response to your comment above that ToddK's response to the video "just smacks of jealosy." Clearly you would be wrong in that observation.

Every guitarist on that show is better than average, at least since the fifth episode(didn't watch earlier shows) and to play well at age of 13 like the two guitarists on that show is quite impressive. To demand higher standards is unnecessary in my opinion.

Being the best guitar player in the world doesn't mean you can't be jealous of other players. But of course I didn't necessarily just mean being jealous of someone's playing ability. You don't know if I am right or wrong. It was an unnecessarily personal word though, and I meant no offense, sorry ToddK.

I am envious of those young players for various reasons - their easy ability to entertain, the fact that most of them seem to be near-jobbing musicians who entertain for a living , the fun they are having doing something they love and so on.

I just didn't like the negative statement "it would be great if they had somebody on the show that can play the guitar. " - no big deal.

@tele: Next time, instead of posting a link to a dodgy illegal download site which also displays pornographic ads (fortunately my daughter couldn't see my screen when I clicked that link), perhaps you could link to the legal official video?

This is the episode with Paco Peña from the Guitar Star channel on YouTube: https://youtu.be/0lcdGhH99f4

That's what google found and worked fine for me. What difference does it make in legality if it's uploaded on youtube or for example vodlocker, the video is the same?! If you have a problem with the link then don't click it and find your own sources for the same video instead. The link I shared had several links to different uploads of the episode, most of which are working fine for me.
Adblock is useful tool on the net, BTW.

The kids are not bad at all but watching that Milos guy strum "rasgeos" was making me cringe with every hit.

sorry, didnt mean to start a big thing. I'm really speaking more of the general
idea of this competition.
The judges making intermediate/mediocre players out to be prodigies.

For instance, gbramer mentions the "Alfie" kid having "great metal chops"
and competently recording a song with a world class producer.

This is exactly the skewed message that i think is so wrong.

News flash; He does not have any great metal chops going on at the moment,
but he may at some point if he keeps practicing.

I have many students his age that could do what he did on the show, and many
of them have only been playing a few years. For that matter, Millions of average rock guitarists could play some power chords and a few sloppy pentatonic scales. Being in a big studio with a producer present does not make it more noteworthy in my opinion.

This is what these shows like American Idol, or The voice do. They take average joes, and put them in front of a camera, on a huge stage, huge studio, lights, graphics, band, choir, orchestra behind them and are getting paid to say how they are the reincarnation of Mozart.
They are feeding the public a bunch of bull. People should know what true artistry/genius is. This is where we are in this world now, and its sad. "everybody wins" Everybody is amazing at everything" And if you dont agree then AAHHH YOU"RE JUST JEALOUS.

Sorry, i dont buy into it. I think its bad. Everybody does'nt get to win.
You shouldnt get things handed to you cause you have long hair, and you're really cute and outgoing like Alfie the little metal head or Milos the handsome guy who is signed to a major label yet cant play a decent rasgeo to save his life. You have to put in the work. Thats how i see it at least. You dont have to agree. I'm just saying.

Or hey, i'm probably "JUST JEALOUS!!!"

Your observation is spot-on, Todd, and it can be applied to just about every endeavor one chooses today. The idea that there is such a thing as "excellence" is considered to be "elitist," and God forbid that anyone's true excellence is honored over those of a more mediocre cast. This attitude permeates our society today.

In many elementary school athletic teams, in order not to make someone's little darling feel inferior, there is no "most valuable player" trophy. No, now everyone on the team wins a trophy, even the kid who sat on the bench the entire season. There was a recent article in the Washington Post about how many high schools no longer choose the most accomplished scholar as valedictorian. Now, in order to make everyone above a certain grade-point average "feel good about themselves," schools may have 20 or 50 students sharing the title "Valedictorian."

Unfortunately, we live in an age that praises mediocrity and thinks even the unaccomplished should "feel good about themselves." Elitism has become a pejorative codeword for being a snob, even when the term is applied correctly to describe the truly gifted and accomplished elite. It had its genesis about 30 years ago in the "self esteem" movement that started in California, but it has since infected our entire society. And its pernicious effect crosses all lines of endeavor, from school academics and sports to so-called "talent" shows and music.

I'm with ya'll on this. These people are fine but not unusually talented. The vast majority of non-musicians can't hear the difference between a pretty good guitarist and an amazing one. Dunno how that applies to this but I'm sure it's in there somewhere lol.

What the F was that "song" Milos played??? So terrible, like "March of the Mariachi". I listened to it like 3 times cus I couldn't comprehend it being that terrible. Then he ends with "Well, now that my bloods boiling." Ugh it made me want to stab myself in the ears. I've never heared him play anything else so he may be a fine classical player but he should NEVER strum a guitar again, so painful to watch......

EDIT:
Found it, it's a De Falla song called Danza del Molinero, doesn't sound so bad when played by an orchestra but far from my favorite De Falla song. Really think it shouldn't have made it's way to guitar adaptation.....
Looks like Paco does it some justice. I think this is a classical piece better left to flamencos.

I think, due to the numbers of technically players around, that almost anyone who decided to study hard from an early age could get to this level.

In Spain a similar competition would have hundreds or thousands of whizzkids playing “flamenco”. (Though the uncultured aficionado might prefer Moraito or Melchor.)

More interesting would be a singing competition to find, for example a new Terremoto or a new Robert Plant. There would be a lot fewer entries.

It's a modern construct to make everything is a f****** gameshow on television.

Someone wants to be a chef. Have a gameshow. Get a load of desperate contestants and get some ****head judges to say what they have done is worthless or the greatest thing they've ever come across and everyone cries like their mother/father/pet dog was killed by a drunk driver in front of them the day before.

Replace the word 'chef', for guitarist, singer, baker, etc'

***
Morante, when it comes to singing competitions the contests they have are generally won by a contestant who sings the incarnate of Michael Bolton in a nice dress/shirt. Over the top warbling with no restraint, taste or anything of any musical interest.

Every time I accidentally stumble across such a television show I hope there will be an electrical mishap and all the contestants, judges and audiences will meet premature ends and the relentless marketed assault on music will be over.
