For musicians of this caliber it is not uncommon to have 20-30 guitars and more, all of high brands.
That being said, the stuff Paco was playing around 1996-ish or so, and the sound thereof, are definitely not my favorites compared to both earlier stuff like Almoraima and later stuff like Luzia.
Amigo....it's the same guitar since 1982 with John Mclaughlin...you can't replicate certain details...the side and back wood, and the top grain has an unusual "V" shape from the bottom to the bridge...it's the same guitar refinished again and again...and the INNER PORTION of the rosette was changed. The outer ring was kept. Why? Not really sure who did the job but they would know.
He has used a handful of other guitars on stage, I would say because some repairs were being done. The year dates of midifications I have noticed are as follows:
Original condition in 1982 with peeling golpeador
new golpeador 1983 (carmen movie)
1984 refinished in red, including covering the original rosette
1997 refinished in red orange again after extensive damage occured as of 1996 concerts. (nice shots in "francisco Sanchez doc shot 2001). Also machines where changed various times (gotohs in 2004 after cositas came out).
2006 complete over hall with natural finish and a new veneered face plate for head stock.
Not sure when the wider golpeador was added but the mundo flamenco shots were made when the tuners were changed once again.
The final concerts, of course, and the movie "La Busqueda" show the guitar clearly in the final form.
Even Ruben D. knows all this man.

Regarding sound - Sr. Martens - what I had in mind was that in the 2nd half of the 90s Paco appeared to be purposefully shooting for a super clean, crisp sound, which - IMHO - made some of his pieces sound more clinical than I would have liked if I was his mixing engineer. The tonal difference is quite stark compared to albums recorded around that time by other people playing Condes (e.g Tomatito - Rosas de Amor, Canizares - Noches de Iman y Luna), etc. This is of course my personal preference, but my take is that a flamenco guitar is a very rich instrument and it does not do it justice to discolor it as much, which is what the equipment Paco used at that time was doing. As you (correctly) indicate, this is more an issue of microphones and mixing/engineering than of guitar.
Can understand your opinon about change of sound...but this also corresponded to a change in direction musically. It is better to evaluate sound of guitars from live videos better because studio recordings can be a combination of different instruments and different time periods, and even different studios, pieced together over time (not recorded in one afternoon!) and made to sound "uniform" only by mastering process (brightness volume compression etc).
For the record, though he used the same conde negra LIVE since the time in question, he had been using other instruments in the studio since 1990....namely, Juan Montero Aguilera, Lester Devoe (seen and heard in Saura's "Flamenco" movie), Vicente Carillo, and god knows what else. He actually put time to list guitars on his last disc, yet it's virtually impossible to tell what was used where exactly.
