HAS MANOLO SANLUCAR RETIRED?!

Can anyone tell me what Manolo Sanlucar has been up to lately? I don't think he's released any albums in the last few years since Tauromagia, and that was in 1988!
We've had quite a few visits from Flamenco guitarists over here in London, including PDL, Gerardo, Juan Martin, and PP and VA are soon to come.

But what about Manolo? Whats he been doing? I would love to actually get to see him play. Anyone know if he's got any tours planned? Or has he got his own website?

Any info much appreciated!

James

I've recently seen promotion for his concerts. I think he was in Granada for the Autumn Guitar Festival, though it may have been a one off concert. He also composes and produces. He composed Sara Baras version of Marian Pineda back in 2002.

James,

Manolo has recently launched his own web site:
http://www.manolosanlucar.com/

I think it is in Spanish only, but I may be wrong.

Thanks guys... this is exactly what I wanted to know.

Its good to hear that Manolo is still performing, even if he hasn't recorded anything recently.

Yes, the website appears to be in Spanish only. But from what I could tell, it doesn't give much info on tours and workshops, only a general background story with some interesting pictures of Manolo.

Anyway, if anyone ever hears anything about him coming to play (or teach) in England, please post the info in the flamenco events section.

Gracias,

James

Jbash, you missed Locura de Brisa y Trino in 2000. Also, again MARIANA PINEDA is amazing music of his written for Sara Baras, played by Jose maria Banderas (it is a DVD). If you liked Tauromagia, you will probably like both of those works. Also he does 2 awesome pieces (1 duet with Paco) in the movie "SEVILLANAS" by Carlos Saura, 1992. Also there are two orchestral works out of print that you may be able to find that came out near Tauromagia, "MEDEA" and "ALJIBE". He gives a course every summer in Cordoba.

He has composed some of the nicest tremolos in flamenco's history, I would not hold that against him!

Thanks Ricardo! I will try and track down the CD and DVDs you mentioned. Although apparently some of his stuff is only available on record (vinyl), and I don't have a record player at the moment. The duet with Paco sounds great! But if you ever see the orchestral works for sale on Cd please let me know. At first I wasn't sure about Tauromagia, but now that I've got the hang of cante I like it.

And thanks for the book recommendation, Leo... I would love to read it... maybe one day when I'm fluent in Spanish!

I saw Manolo in concert this summer in Cordoba. Let me tell you that it was one of the greatest concerts I've every seen. He is far from retirement. He is still very active in the education world. He give master classes and is always taking someone under his wing.

His concert blew away PDL's. Far more preperation and dedication. The accompanying guitars was a true second guitar part, not just strumming out some cords. His name is Santiago Lara. What a talent!!! I'm sure he'll have a lot of success.

Un saludo, Errol

Sounds great, Errol. Time and money won't permit me to travel to Spain right now, but I hope he decides to do a world tour one day!

James

PS: thanks for that Pedro De Miguel cejilla you sold me a while back... it has served me well!

I fished Manolo Sanlucar´s 1982 recording "...al viento" out of a bargain bucket a few months ago. It is definitely not what I was expecting, especially the last track "laberinto" which sounds as though it should have been called Jazz Odyssey.

But the way he tears into the bulerias "mezquita" has to be heard to be believed.

I also saw him play in Jerez last year. A great concert, but completely over my head.
