Wound strings slip at nut

I'm sure I have read something here about this topic but I couldn't find the right key words when I searched for it. I have a problem with the wound strings jumping up or down in pitch when I am tuning them. Is there something I can do to make them less prone to jumping?

It sounds like they are sticking. The nut probably needs a little work to allow the strings to move freely. If you don't mind a little mess you could always just run a pencil in the slot to make it slippery in the mean time.

Are you using thicker strings than usual? If so, widen the slots a bit. If not, polish the slots.

Take a fat piece of cotton string and put toothpaste on it and use it to polish the string slots a little bit. If that helps, there you go, they just needed to be burnished. If not widen them a little, very carefully.

Just a follow up...

I used the "finishing" side of my Revlon fingernail file and gave the string slot a few swipes and the string now slides like butter. Thanks for the advice. What a great board!
