Favourite songs palo by palo

Please share your favourites, one or more flamenco styles. I know there's pretty much no best ones but there are those that are incredibly good songs.

That's why there's more than one favourite I guess also that's why so far everyone has shared only one song of their favourites

but its like ...favourite brush stoke on a Pablo Picasso picture ...
Well i liked that daub of blue at the top

I think I would rather stand back and see the picture , or music in this case, as a whole thing...not so much broken down into tiny immovable blocks

I like the mosaic analogy.

Also the story of the men who spent years looking for the formulation for and baking of the glazes to offer each precise coloured ceramic tile is one I would care to hear. I don't think it would distract me from the mosaic at all more likely enrich my appreciation.

I can't say it either. But sometimes I really like those famous spanish songs por bulería, for example el emigrante from juan valderrama sung by el pele, or volver from carlos gardel interpreted by estrella morente.
luz en los balcones from terremoto hijo is also a nice song and a standard among cantadores jerezanos.

yeah ,, i should probably leave this thread instead of standing here complaining and bring everyone down ....sorry bout that ...
I'll go and complain to someone else on a different thread ....lets see .....
erm .. aha ...Treble strings for Cedar Negra?.. that looks pointless and subjective as well ... i;ll go and winge about that for a while ....

why do people always think that . strings .......blah blah blah .

The point is to share great songs that some people haven't heard, even if they're famous.

Here's nice bulerias with some unusual instruments added:

Now that hit the mark for me tonight. My only criticism would be why on earth someone would ruin a wonderful recording by making it suddenly swim in reverb from about 1.12 in?
Anyway... great share!! Thanks.

Cristina posted this on the farruca thread.

Which was just great.

Here is another take on it by Jacinto de Almaden.

I wonder if there is less interpretation of old songs because of the desire for composer and publisher credits in the music bizz ?

There is a similar situation with Jazz. For a long time now (on recordings at least) there has been much more focus on original compostitions and less on reinterpreting the canon and that has lead to a lot of forgettable albums with nine minute disposable jams on stock progressions.

It would be great as a guitarist to hook up with a singer who wanted to explore this type of material. And I think it would be a much more educational and rewarding than playing generic rumba with another guitarist. Not that those are the only options.

It has a special place in my heart as Pepe was the first flamenco guitarist I heard properly on a recording (A Mandeli), and I once lived in a small village in the mountains of Granada.

thank you cereza.
Incredible, but I've never heard this one!

in another thread was mentioned Manuel Gerena, so here we go:

This song also was recorded in a live concert, where M.G. stops after the 1. deeply emotive vers and asks: " me puedo parar? - I've begun in a little false pitch" the crowd responded and he starts from the beginning. That (for me) is flamenco. It's a way of living and deeply connected with trueness. (IMI)

I'm glad that you liked it, cristina. Yours is great, too.

Now I put a completely different one, a Colombiana, composed by José Galán, but I couldn't find a good video of him singing this song.

Niña de los Peines sings Asturianada accompanied by Niño Ricardo - a recording from 1932.
Asturianada? Is it a palo? If yes it really died out. Never heard anyone singing this.

Cristina Cruces Roldán, in her long and detailed biograaphy La Niña de los Peines, El mundo flamenco de Pastora Pavon writes:

"Si bien es verdad que Pastora Pavón centró sus grabaciones en formas musicales ya establecidas y reconocidas del flamenco, intuyó el papel que podían tener otros muchos en trance de desaparición, obsoletos o se encontraban en posición tangencial respecto a aquellas. El flamenco asumió en su voz distintas músicas folklóricas y populares a las que la cantaora imprimió un sello inusitado.¨

Cruces Roldán mentions garrotín, farruca (which was just being aflamencada at the beginning of the 20th century), bamberas, guajira, vidalita, rumbas, sones cubanos and Montoya's milonga. All of these were later recorded by other artists, with the possible exception of sones cubanos. Some were generally accepted as flamenco palos.

But for asturiana, Cruces Roldán writes, "Aflamencó la forma musical de la asturiana como una impresión insólita en la historia de flamenco...¨

RNJ

Google Translate is seviceable, if a little clumsy.

The Asturian musical form is flamencoized as an unusual impression in the history of flamenco.

Just found this. Asturianada por Bulerías. Some kind of cuplé.
