Yet another Aussie...

Hi all,

I've been a member here for a while now and for some reason always avoided writing this little into, but here I am! Coming to this forum is part of my daily, delay the start of work ritual...

And yes, another Aussie, though I'm living in Sevilla right now. Was working in London but managed to convince my boss on the idea of me working from Spain. Que suerte!

Regarding my flamenco journey... I still feel like I'm taking my first steps on a track that trails off past the horizon...

A year and a half ago I did a 3 month course in Granada (Carmen De Las Cuevas), which was my intro into the world of flamenco... The guitar course was half the price of the language course, so was an easy choice. I'm a little ashamed to admit that before this course started I would of answered the question... Name a flamenco artist? With...

The Gypsy Kings.

The course was an awesome introduction, however a new palo each week was a bit of a head f&*k, however this course caters for new students each week so is a format that has to be. I made some great friends and the Albayzin will always have a place in my heart.

Fast forward to Sevilla, I've been taking group classes with Eduardo Rebollar, whose meant to be the best in Sevilla for learning how to accompany cante. Which has been great, still getting used to the Sevillano accent, plenty of things go straight over my head, especially jokes. There's nothing like the feeling of being in a group of 10 people laughing while your just wearing an awkward smile. Seeing people accompany singers and also being able to accompany some dance has been awesome. 50 euros a month for two nights week is definately value for money...

I'm also taking a few classes with a teacher called Jesus Montoya whose based out of a new school Flamenqueria. Amazing facilities, nice people, a touch on the expensive side but I've been really happy with the lessons so far.

Anyways, didn't expect to be going into essay writing mode so I'll wrap this up.

The main reason I'm writing this is to thank all of you who contribute on a daily basis, I've learnt so much from this forum, and although it's often a humbling experience to be reminded of how little I still know, I appreciate the time, passion and knowledge you guys put into your posts and responses.

And lastly I'd like to say, I purchased a ticket last night for 16 euros for a concert in Cordoba. Gerardo Nunez, Diego Del Morao & Dani De Moron... Thats right 16 euros! My train ticket back cost more than that. I'm kinda excited and had to write this here cause I feel like this is a place where you guys may understand that excitement.

Essay over... back to work. Thanks for your time.

Steven
Ps. I did take a skype lesson with one of the resident experts here in the foro Ricardo. And thought it was awesome, something I will definately continuing when I land back on Australian soil. Thanks again Ricardo!

Now that you're in the light of day, welcome to the foro!

It looks like that was a great concert:

Hey Steven!

G'day from Australia! I'm actually heading into Spain for a couple of months to live the flamenco life for a little while. Literally just picking up my guitar and coming up. I'm thinking of settling in Jerez but also spending quite a bit of time in Sevilla. If you have the time, would love to catch up for beer mate! Literally do not know one person there or where to start!!? So would be awesome to meet up with not only an AUSSIE but an Aussie who plays flamenco!

Cheers Mate
Ali

Hey Ali,

I hit you up on facebook as it will be much easier to communicate...

I'm going to be skipping the summer heat for a few months and heading north to a good friend in Valencia. Will be back by early October... Hopefully you'll still be around by then but we can talk about this in facebook land. If you accept my friend request... WTF?!?

I may try and add something to the Sevilla/Jerez thread, if not will be happy to try and offload some insights into my experience this year through the eyes of an Awstraylian... (potentially a bit warped?)

Espero que hablas muy mal Espanol y voy a sentir mejor sobre la nivel que yo tengo. :)

Don't forget to pack your Australian flag boxer shorts... because you just never know when you might need a little sumthin' extra to get you over the line. (This could be about the extent of my flamenco insights by the way... haha)

Hablamos pronto!

Etevi
(Hopefully the locals won't have the same trouble with your name...)
