Most famous and/or skilled foreign f... 
Can you share some skilled non-spanish flamenco artist videos, guitarists or singers?

I am interested to see some as so far I haven't seen a close match to Andalucian artists(just an opinion).

Have you seen some of our Foro members perform? For example, I can report to you that Ricardo and Grisha (whom I have hired to perform for my guitar society on more than one occasion) are first class performers. Go to Youtube and view their videos-there are too many to post.

Of course there are others.

Ricardo Marlow, Jason Mcguire, Tino van der Sman, Flavio Rodriguez, Jose Tanaka, are some players that not only play great but also know to acompany cante and baile VERY WELL!! Im sure there´s a lot more not being mencioned so far...

Some were already mentioned. I would like to add Jin Oki, with whom I had a great pleasure performing recently. Killer player, musical and has very nice style. Also my friend from Boston, Juanito Pascual. Very nice person and awesome artist. Has Adam del Monte been mentioned? Wow, killer guitarist. Also, haven't we recently been voting for Amir John Haddad?

Exactly, well said, Don (of course there are others but) Ricardo and Grisha are superb. I have them in my Flamenco music rotation along with Vicente Amigo, Paco De Lucia and Tomatito...

As all foreigners do with foreign languages, Ricardo and Grisha are punctilious in their adherence to the Famenco's 'grammar' (the traditions and rules they respect), and yet, each is himself, bringing his own individually diverse style and voice to a pure and ever so compelling composition and/or performance .

David Serva, hands down. Before anyone on the Foro was born he played for Juan Talega and Fernanda etc. Not just played for them, but worked professionally at that level in Spain beginning the 1960's. Played for Agujetas for five years. Played with Geronimo Mayas father Felipe for several years in tablao and had a lot of influence on Geronimo himself. He's the first to be and probably still is, most accepted by the Gitano singers as an important guitarist who came from outside the culture.

You can add Carlos Lomas and Keni Parker, and probably Gerald Howson too. Each for his own abilities to enter into flamenco in Spain at a deep level.

There more than a few non Spanish dancers who should be included, but singers...that is a tough one. In San Francisco Are La Tania and Yaelisa would be dancers of high level who became seasoned dancers who are respected in Spain.

Just to be fair to all the generations, if it was not for guys like Howson who went to Spain in early 50's or David Serva in the late 50's flamenco would not have come back to other countries in such intact and unwatered down form.

Miguel de la Bastide is very good. He's from Trinidad, lives in Canada.

Yolanda Arroyo, from Los Angeles, is also well respected as a Dancer although she is Spanish, and so is Yaelisa I believe. There is a non-Spanish dancer in San Diego who can blow your socks off. Her name is Stephania Rey. She has been dancing since age 10 but does not really dance much anymore. I believe she is in her 20's now, a real shame.

I suppose I shouldn't mention Peter Evans (el rubio de California) who had a full length lp out in the early years then there is Sarita although I don't know if she was Spanish. I certainly enjoyed the way both of them played and in the case of Sarita sang.

I know Peter Evans, but I have not seen him in a long time.



BTW Yaelisa is American- but see there it is, people assume she is Spanish because she's good.

A few other dancers in California are Diana Alejandro and Lourdes Garcia.

I know it seems strange to pull out these names, but flamenco did not go outside Spain yesterday, there were really good non Spanish flamencos working before this generation.

Not to say the people that are an the foro are not brilliant, but we should always remember who we came from and who taught us about afcion for flamenco.

I think people assume Yaelisa is Spanish because that is what her biography leads you to believe. She states that she started dancing at Casa Madrid at age 4 and that her mother is a well renowned dancer named Isa Mura.

Actually I know her quite well and I've never read the bio, I never had to......Let's put it up and see what our lady has accomplished. If you read carefully it says in plain sight she's American. I don't see any part of her bio which is misleading about who she is. Casa Madrid refers to some venue her mom performed at. Her mom was more a of a singer than dancer. Not to be down on you I just want my friend to be represented correctly in public.

Fifth sentence in it states she's American. She will never say this either, but she can sing por solea, she's a fantastic, but reluctant singer. She hires good singers though.

~... At the age of 4 she danced on the stage of the famous Casa Madrid, and flamenco and its culture were a part of her life because of her mother, the renowned Isa Mura. She has performed with many of Spain’s finest artists, including Alejandro Granados, Antonio “El Pipa,” Manuel and Antonio Malena, Domingo Ortega, Enrique “El Extremeno,” Yeye de Cádiz, Mateo Soleá, El Junco, Juan Ogalla, Geronimo, Felipe Maya and others. Since 1986, Yaelisa has spent extensive periods of time living and performing in Spain, presenting her choreography there and in the U.S. Her choreographies have been commissioned by several modern dance companies, including John Malashock & Company, Rose Polsky and Collage Dance Theatre. In 1995, she was one of 11 choreographers in Spain invited to present her choreography at the prestigious Certámen de Coreografía in Madrid, and the only American choreographer chosen among them. In 1996, she returned to the U.S. where she continues to choreograph, develop and train dancers for her company. Internationally recognized as a master teacher, Yaelisa has developed a teaching style that emphasizes cultural understanding and knowledge of the cante. Her unique improvisational knowledge and history lend an authority to her workshops and classes, and many of her students and dancers have gone on to study and perform in Spain and the U.S.

She is the recipient of an Emmy Award for Choreography in 1993 for the PBS program, "Desde Cádiz a Sevilla," and a Choreography Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1996. In 1998 Yaelisa was commissioned to choreograph and perform in the San Jose Repertory Theater's production of "Twelfth Night," with original music by Musical Director Jason McGuire and Company members. Entering its sixth successful year, she continues to present her work and those of emerging artists each month at the ODC Cafe Flamenco Series at the ODC Theater. The Company has received two major grants from the SF Arts Commission, and continues to be one of the most prolific performing arts groups in the Bay Area. In 2005, Yaelisa and her company were honored to receive an Isadora Duncan Dance Award in for excellence in the category of “Best Company Performance.”

Yaelisa is also the founder and Artistic Director of The New World Flamenco Festival, presented each year at the Irvine Barclay Theater in Irvine, California. In three years, this Festival has become the second largest and most comprehensive flamenco festival in North America, offering master classes, workshops, educational activities in conjunction with performances from visiting Spanish companies, as well as Yaelisa’s Caminos Flamencos.

as someone from boston i was gonna add grisha and juanito but they have already been mentioned so i will second the nomination. both are from the very flamenco area of boston; well actually grisha is originally from russia and juanito is from minnesota. hmm, must be something about super cold winters and flamenco.

i would also nominate dennis koster who is from new york city and took lessons from sabicas and mario escudaro.

Amazing to me how aficionados will blend artists on an apparent same level despite of performances far apart. With performances on the one hand largely still determined by individual comfort / limits equalled to on the other hand perfectly phrased playing and great skill of touch.

Thinly / naily flitting along gigs equalled to lush and fully controlled playing.

In the same time the curious thing about thelike insensibility being that I am of the kind of listener who can appreciate all levels of advance or entry level, while with the indistinguishing fraction there often times seems to reign a rigid classification of artists.

Some of the players listed above do not rank close to the seamless and flicky playing of a Grisha ( non-Spanish) or the amazing brush of a Mariano Martin for that matter ( Spanish).
And I think it worth to differentiate playing skills when meaning to line up artists as of same category.
This is my personal hearing / opinion.
