Gitano Flavor

As I read, "Gypsies and Flamenco" by B. Leblon a second time I once again read the section (pp. 8 - 10) that describe the "flavor" of flamenco. One excerpt: "... what counts here is not the pure and polished sound imposed by the anixous academicism of our conservatories, but outrageous expressivity, a sound too human to be heard without a total upheaval of one's being...it is not meant to please the listener, but to wound him like a dagger brandished in passion." My background has been mostly South American music that is meant to please, so I've been working on the latter part of this quote both in technique and in mindset. One hurdle I face is getting to that level of humanity due to my comfortable environment; as they say, one cannot be a bluesman and have a trust fund. With that in mind I am working on reading history and having a love for the art and its true meaning. Wish me luck.

forget reading, you're supposed to be illiterate, you have to forget all your education and learning and just rely on your instincts....

but outrageous expressivity

No dagger in the heart here, but I was surprised how "juicy" Paco's playing is here. I would include a clip of Bream/Williams version for comparison as Bream has described his playing as "juicy" but I don't wish to rile the aficionados

Dont worry. Nowadays flamenco isnt like that. Its all been polished and watered out and it all sounds the same. If you listen to CD´s with persons like Archangel and his group and basically everything else from the last decade, you will know what I mean.

that urge to violence (to wound with sound) is what links metal and flamenco in my mind

Latin America doesn't need to brandish music like a weapon, they have AK-47's and machetes
