Once you remove the duplicates, how many unique PDL recordings did you find in total? I don't mean whole albums, but recordings as in single "songs". Further, once you remove the different recordings of the same composition - how many unique compositions (his and by others that he recorded) did you find?

Easy math to come up with the last number for solo guitar....just add up tracks from each album excluding the live albums. 4 for early ep, 10 for each of his early LPs (about 4), 8 for each of his modern LPs (about 6). 10 early modrego duets and 4 trio compositions, 1 sevillanas duet with Sanlucar, that's it. About One Hundred guitar/instrumental compositions. As for other's compositions he recorded solo, you have to take away 4 covers he did in his early albums (montoya, Escudero, E sanlucar), and add the N. Ricardo Alegria for the tribute they did in 71. Most of his duets and collaboration discs were other peoples compositions, so a rather large body of music to add.

So I have this gig and it's a long drive so I was digging through my CD collection and dusted off this old collectors CD I bought long time ago. Being the guitar trio freak I am, I purchased this limited edition thing in the mid 90's of Friday night in Sanfrancisco with a 24 karat gold disc and fancy package. I used to listen to this one for it's superior fidelity but I replaced it with the reissue that came out after the Guitar Trio reunion disc, as I couldn't tell much of a difference between the two versions. I dusted this gold disc off and popped it in the car and it really sparkled when I cranked it up. Maybe it's just an auditory illusion, but anyway I forgot about including in your discography. So here are the two reissues from Columbia/Legacy:

Friday night in San Francisco (Master Sound Series, 24k disc) 1994, Columbia CK 64410
And
Friday Night in San Francisco reissue 1997, Columbia/Legacy CK 65168

The Gold disc has that cheesy poster and nothing new inside really, and the later reissue has a cool interview with Dimeola and liner notes by Bill Milkowsky, they talk about how exciting this music was and how the new trio had mellowed (lol). Don't think you need to add these to the discography but they were interesting to collectors I guess.

Also wanted to add, for fun, the bootleg DVD I bought from an Al Dimeola concert. He claimed it to be from his vault, but it was a very bad VHS to DVD conversion, of the now superior quality SATURDAY NIGHT concert on youtube. The box looked pretty official though,

I only recently realized this piece is based on McLaughlin’s “electric dreams” and Antonio Rey basically slows it down for his bolero on Alma. I was a bit let down thinking that was one of Antonio’s best compositions.

Since Pimientito is not active around here anymore, he told me to put up the new albums that have expanded the discography of Paco by two, these last two years.

Discussed a lot already is the Saturday night in San Francisco (see my signed copy by Al Dimeola), that came out summer of 2022. And the Montreux years of Paco’s group (1984, 2006, 2012), just out February 2023. Although both albums are edited/remastered material we have been familiar with from YouTube for decades, having gotten into vinyl recently, I have been enjoying both offerings quite a bit. The San Francisco album was actually edited by Al and his team, but mastered/mixed differently by Ear music (released in Europe first, only on CD with Black Orpheus) and Impax Records (the vinyl I have) with bonus track of Paco’s bulerias solo. A side by side comparison reveals different usages of compression, eq, and reverb. I can’t honestly say which I prefer, and knowing that this is a digital job doesn’t add much to the vinyl versions vs. CD, but I like the big gatefold jackets and booklet.

The Montreux is a double LP, with 2 tracks per side, Mclaughlin adds commentary. While Entre dos Aguas is presented twice, plus Buana King Kong, the other tracks are actually quite enjoyable to listen to after a long time. The best piece is the Rondeña, (wrongly labeled as Variaciones de Minera). Zyryab is quite good, as Josele got his picado together on this one and the singers Montse and La Tana sound better up at 9 por medio than the male singers screaming that I have been used to, trying to squeeze out letras of siguiriyas and Solea in this piece at the end. The three classic solos missing from his last live in Spain album (2010), Alegrias, Bulerias and Rondeña make this album complementary rather than redundant IMO. Of course with YouTube at our fingertips, all this is of minor significance. So what could be left to add to this discography in the future? Well, I could imagine more video material such as Montreux guitar Trio, and other live concerts that are archived somewhere. But for know, I feel the discography is more than complete.

just realize that i lost my first Cd of the genre many years ago "Entre Dos Aguas" , but its easy to get another one.

Some months ago i bought a "Spanish Guitar Magic the gold collection 40 songs" for 4 euros .
Its a double cd with old Segovia recording , Carlos Montoya (he misses some notes in few songs) and of course Paco de Lucia. Not remastered....
I heard the cds couple of time duo to the quality of the recording, but the Pacos part its better , because its "modern".
Those songs with flute ... its mainly from that period.

But theres a song that i didnt know and it was like earing Paco for the first time (back in 99 or somethig)

Its called "Danza de los vecinos" from Manuel de Falla (didnt know him)

It looks like the complete Falla album from 1977 plus a couple duets with Modrego from Garcia Lorca album and the other of Spanish copla.

That is from recital de guitarra flamenca 1971. We had gone through and decided these compilations you keep pulling from are junk, and not helpful to keeping track of the discography of Paco, which was an attempt to find all the unique recorded material. In certain cases re-issues had interesting one-off tracks, or special remixes or such of familiar tracks that are important to include, but these compilations pulled at random from original sources add nothing and are just confusing junk on this thread topic. If you find a unique track not in the main discography please share.

Yes, it was probably the intent of the producers of that compilation to give that wrong impression. Earlier in the thread you find the argument about “two Pacos” where many were duped into thinking Paco Peña (side A) was playing duets with Paco de Lucia (side B was the Paco/Ramon duets). Attempts to cash in on the names back in the day when music actually cost money.

Ricardo need you help , i also have another 3cd Paco compilation , his best 50 songs (but lacks some...and the second cd is all about south american sound)
So , in the third cd , theres a live session of "Gitanos Andaluzes" with the sextet, maybe the best live performance that i ever heard in many ways... , all the players were perfect , live sound perfect , and the public vibe too.. but i cant find where it was played...its just stupid that the only live version on the Cd doesnt say that its with the sextet and where the live was.

Does this ring you a bell maybe on other cd or album that you can recognize my description ?

1984 Live one summer night, European tour. Germany usually has the best audio, and details about each country visited in the album booklet, however, they don’t assign location to individual tracks.

Rescatan unas grabaciones inéditas de Pepe y Paco de Lucía

Bulería Niño Ricardo’ y ‘Me falta la Resistencia’ son los adelantos de Pepito y Paquito, como eran conocidos entonces Pepe y Paco de Lucía. Se trata de los primeros registros sonoros de dos figuras esenciales del flamenco contemporáneo cuando tenían 12 y 10 años. (La edición contará con esta portada donde los dos niños: Paco y Pepe caminan en Algeciras junto a su madre Lucía)

Estas piezas inéditas se publicará a través de BMG junto a la Fundación Paco de Lucía y en ella se recogerán un total de 21 canciones grabadas antes de su primer material oficial como Los Chiquitos de Algeciras. Este descubrimiento de gran valor artístico e histórico se ha hecho público durante el Festival Paco De Lucía Legacy , que se ha celebrado en Nueva York del 20 al 24 de febrero.

La historia de estas grabaciones:

Antes de darse a conocer como Paco de Lucía y Pepe de Lucía, fueron Pepito y Paquito. Dos prodigios del cante y el toque rodeados de arte y música en su Algeciras natal. Tan solo unos pocos tuvieron constancia y acceso a las que fueron las primeras grabaciones de los hermanos Sánchez Gómez, a la edad de 13 y 11 años de Pepe y Paco respectivamente, realizadas entre 1959 y 1960. Ahora, BMG junto a la Fundación Paco de Lucía rescatan 21 piezas inéditas que escarban en el tiempo para trasladarnos al génesis de dos grandes personalidades del flamenco.

Como avance inicial de Pepito y Paquito se presentan con ‘Bulería Niño Ricardo’ y ‘Me falta la Resistencia’ dos de estos registros fonográficos que preceden a los que fueron sus primeros trabajos oficiales rubricados como el dúo Los Chiquitos de Algeciras en 1961. Grabados de manera rudimentaria con un magnetofón Grunding de la época, suponen dos documentos sonoros que encierran un valor histórico incalculable.

El lanzamiento de ambas canciones coincide con el décimo aniversario del fallecimiento del que es considerado el guitarrista flamenco más universal. Ya está disponible el pre-order del álbum que compila el contenido de unas bobinas extraviadas hasta la fecha.

Prematuros destellos de grandeza:

‘Bulería Niño Ricardo’ es un solo de guitarra de Paco de Lucía en el que su esencia y su técnica limpia y depurada evidencia la genialidad y el talento que ya atesoraba. Una composición que no oculta su inspiración en Niño Ricardo, uno de los grandes precursores del toque flamenco contemporáneo. La huella de quien fuera referente musical en los prematuros inicios de Paco queda patente, pero también se adivina el germen de una personalidad artística diferente que está en plena formación y evolución. Espejo y reflejo del alumno que años después superará al maestro.

La voz de Pepe de Lucía irrumpe con nervio y carisma en ‘Me Falta La Resistencia’, adaptando un célebre tango de La Repompa de Málaga. Cante jondo lleno de desgarro y pasión que cristaliza en el diálogo natural que se produce entre su capacidad vocal y la habilidad técnica de su hermano menor. El pulso que ambos le toman a este palo del flamenco en esta grabación inédita es un buen preludio de su histórica participación en el I Concurso Internacional de Arte Flamenco de Jerez de la Frontera.

20 años sin el mayor genio de la guitarra flamenca

El 25 de febrero se cumple una década del fallecimiento de Paco de Lucía en la localidad mexicana de Playa del Carmen. Su corazón se paró a los 66 años en la quietud del paraíso y desde entonces la guitarra flamenca le añora y le recuerda porque ya nadie dialoga con ella como él. Sin embargo, el alma intrépida y creativa de un músico revolucionario continúa palpitando a través de una obra atemporal que ha calado en el tuétano de la cultura popular y que es disfrutada y estudiada por los más entendidos en la materia. Alcanzar la unanimidad dentro la excelencia solo está al alcance de los elegidos. El hijo menor de Antonio Sánchez Pecino fue uno de ellos.

Paco de Lucía no dudó en fusionar el flamenco con otros estilos, desde el jazz hasta la música clásica, sin perder una innegable profundidad que respeta una tradición que conocía al dedillo. A ello se sumaba un dominio técnico con el que cambió la manera de tocar y, sobre todo, una inspiración que le permitía desflorar emociones que traspasan pieles y culturas. Una visión y una capacidad única para transformar formas y narrativas de un género universal. A través de notas y acordes tocados con elegancia y temple, marcó una época de expansión del flamenco a todo tipo de latitudes y territorios sonoros.

En 1959, un amigo de la familia visitó el hogar de Paco de Lucía y Pepe de Lucía, donde realizó varias grabaciones con un grabador de cinta Grundig TK46.
