Such sad news. He was such a great inspiration to so many people and will be greatly missed. I remember every concert of his that I went to vividly and will carry these memories with me until my own demise.

One of flamenco's gold standards, if not the standard, has been lost too soon. He leaves an immense legacy. A sad day.

RE: Paco de Lucia has passed away (in reply to avimuno

With the sixties / seventies of last century as golden age of popular music and music as a whole in the time frame of these years musicians are passing away who used to shine on the sky firmly as if immortal.

And when they leave it makes you sad as if it has been a personal friend. Not just because they essentially contributed to the beautiful part of your life as a passionate music lover, but also because of the general truth that their output has been one of a kind, and will not be paralleled anytime in this universe.

Maybe Paco´s work has not been as fundamental to his genre like say the Beatles´ to theirs, or J.J. Cale´s invention of laid back who passed away too months ago, but he was a great absolutely and inseparable from flamenco and what we contemporaries heard of it.

It is these guys´ legacy when todays and future composers will find pretty much any groove they stumble uppon created before already, and typically even amazingly perfectly developed. The legacy of the great that composers appreciating beauty and originality have only a very scarce line left over to balance on.

Yes, there will be times afterwards still, but not musically comparable. Not nearly as rich and vivid.

It really saddens me to see you one-of-a-kind artists go, Maestro.
Thank you for the music.

Very sad news indeed. He certainly lived as full a life as possible. He inspired me to play flamenco and Im sure many others here too. Apart from the huge musical legacy left behind we will miss his creativity, humility and sense of humour. R.I.P. Paco.

RE: Paco de Lucia has passed away (in reply to avimuno

According to BBC News, Paco de Lucia died in Mexico, in the resort town of Cancun. The BBC reports that he died of a heart attack while playing with his children on the beach. (Paco's wife is from Mexico.) He was only 66 years old, still relatively young, with plenty of good years left in him.

I consider myself fortunate to have been able to attend two of his concerts when he performed in the Washington, DC area. He was one of the giants, not only in flamenco but in the musical world writ large. His passing leaves a huge gap for sure.

Terrible terrible news.

On the beach with his children though, that's something at least.

Wikipedia has the date as the 26th but it must be the 25th (Mexico date). Does anyone know the local time when it happened?
