NorCal Flamenco fan

Hi all, I suppose it's time to stop lurking in the foro and start contributing. I'm a flamenco guitar student and love playing the limited flamenco I know how to play.
I started out getting classical lessons 30 years ago, but it didn't take off as I really didn't listen to classical music. Duh. 10 years later when I met my soon to be wife she was
listening to a band called the Gipsy Kings. My ears perked up. Hmmm. what's this? Sounds like nylon string guitar, but it's cool. Like many here my interest in them led me to
want to play their stuff, which led to more actual flamenco.
I'm enjoying the forum quite a bit with all the youtube links, reviews, etc. What a great resource it has become.
I'm going to start lessons again and it will be interesting to see how different my motivation is compared to before.
We are planning on about 10 days in Spain this summer as part of a Europe trip and I hope to spend some time at a flamenco/Spanish school in Granada. Need to practice up
so that I get more out of that experience. Any advice for my Spain trip would be welcome.

Mark

Welcome!

Are you near the Bay Area? I am not familiar with anyone in Granada, but Chris Cacuzza in San Jose is really good.

I'm in Chico, but grew up in San Jose and return frequently. I'll keep Chris in mind, thanks.

Hi Mark,

Hey I studied flamenco for 3 years in Granada. It's a great place to learn guitar. As tourist/foreigner-centered as it might be, with your limited time to make connections with people there, I'd go to Carmen de Las Cuevas (perhaps this is the school you mentioned). There are several guitarists there who will happily show you stuff. Emilio Maya teaches there. He's great. I worked a lot on cante accompaniment with him. He has a nice style--a mix of old school and more contemporary stuff. Anyways, since you are from nor cal, give me a toque next time you pass through oakland and I'd be happy to talk to you about Granada.
