El Torta

Adiós a un gran cantaor. Juan Moneo passed away this madrugada from cardiac failure at his home in Sanlúcar. He was 60 years old. R.I.P and condolences to his family.

RE: El Torta (in reply to Morante

this new year begins with such a sad news.
I began to appreciate his arte not so long ago. I'm gonna enjoy his stuff more, no doubt.
DEP.

Hoy, mi mujer se fué a la casa de sus padres. Me quedé solo.

RE: El Torta (in reply to Morante

I doubt if I'll be the only one on here to be struck by that last post of Morante's.

In the circumstances, I hesitate to add anything but I thought the following might be worthwhile:

There's a superb collection, "Al Aire de Jerez" (Nuevos Medios 2006), one of the three CDs is as Morante describes, exactly. There is also Jerez: Fiesta y Cante Jondo (Auvidis 1991) El Torta and his distinguished brother Manuel sing on that. If you want to know what cante gitano sounds like, look no further.

Mis mas sinceras condolencias a sus familiares.

RE: El Torta (in reply to Morante

Can someone translate Morante's post?

I think he says "Today my woman went to her parents house. I remained alone. I made rice with lamb(?) and put on a record of the Moneo famiy recorded directly of the family sitting around a table. Some songs were unaccompanied and others were accompanied by the majestic guitar of Moraito.

This is for crying, this is the true pure flamenco."

I'm not a great expert. You got the gist of it. Here are a few notes that might help:

quote:

accompañado de nudos
knuckles, rapping on the table.

"en directo" means live, recorded live.

"hace pocos años en direct" - a few years ago, live…

"Este es para llorar" - I would interpret this as, "It would reduce you to tears".

Sorry for writing in Spanish, but we are all very upset here and emotions are easier to express in Spanish.

The other disc, recorded at the same time and in the same way es de la Familia de La Morena and is also of great value.

Curro, the brother of Fernando de La Morena, seldom sang on stage but many considered him the better cantaor. He died suddenly when, a week later, he was to sing at Viernes Flamencos. That night, Fernando dedicated a seguiriyas to Curro but burst into tears and could not finish the cante.

Anyone who wants to understand the present structure and closeknit nature of the familias gitanas de Santiago should read "Flamencos de la Gañanía" by Estela Zatania.

An apology is not needed or expected...I hope I can speak for all with this.
The translation I could find was much like Mark74 and although perhaps not accurate /exact , enough .
Loss, be it personal from the perspective of one known to us or from the perspective of a common ''link'' such as the love of a musical form is, either way huge. I am/was not familiar with the works of El Torta or the family but am sorry to all family ,friends or lovers of the music which was given/shared. My condolences to all.

Best

This tangos by El Torta is one of my favorites ever. Does anyone know (Morante?) if he created this letra and tune? I've never heard a tangos quite like it before but I've heard it sung more recently by Canelita.

Is that really an appropriate comment on a thread like this? This thread was created to honor an artist who passed away show some respect
