Best piece in each Palo

I think since in some albums you have just one great song or a few ones and then the rest of it is suposed to just be there to fill the album...
So say here what have been the best piece that you have heard so far in each Palo.
I would have to say:

Solea: ''Tomatito-Alquimia''
Taranta: there is one of montse cortes with PDL that starts with a tremolo...I dont know how its called but its amazing!
Buleria: ''Impetu-overall'' ''Nino Miguel-Vinos y Caballos'' .Also there's one from Gnunez that starts slow and then i goes to some dimished arpegios but I dont know how its called...
Granadina:''Vicente Amigo-Morente''
Zapateado:''JMCanizares-Se Alza la Luna''
Mineras: ''Vicente Amigo-Ventanas al alma'' but it's kind of modern though.

That's all I can remember right now, sorry if it's short, I'll check to put some more...I need a new brain

RE: Best piece in each Palo (in reply to carlos soto

Zambra played by Paco Pena and composed by Nino Ricardo. I'll give you my guitar if you can find another zambra better than that one!

Tangos, a tie between Pena's Puerta Tierra and PdL's Solo Queiro Caminar. They're actually both very different but I love both tangos just as much.

I've a Paco Pena solo solea which beats all other solos I've heard.

His bulerias Solquema is wonderful, nothing exotic sounding. Almoraima by PdL is a favorite of mine but a little too filled with extra sounds.

Lastly, Mantilla y Peina is seriously an unbeatable guajiras. A pure guitar solo, traditional as I like it, beautiful and laid back. I prefer it too Guajiras de Lucia which just seems like a show-off track to me.

Lol I'm a Pena fan and I feel that my choices are honestly justified, especially if you're into slightly more traditional stuff.

The 'best' is a difficult label to place on something since my idea of what is the best seems to change, that being said...

Bulerias - Juan Martin does a bulerias ala Diego Gastor on his Flamencos Solos that is one of my favorites.

Guajiras - don't know the name, but it's the second piece in Carlos Saura's Flamenco

I'll post more as i think of them

Yeah one of my favorites too, and maybe one of his favorites to play live. I always felt it was more like a classical piece until I saw him play it in my face, with so much strength, drive, and jerez flavor. These things don't always come through on a recording. Anyway, this type of bulerias is in a genre all its own, like Escudero's Impetu, Moraito's Vals-Buleria, and many other similar pieces where the rhythm and melody is maintained by arpeggios mainly. In fact there is a little quote in Trafalgar from Escudero's Impetu that you might notice.

Anyway, for me, the best versions or "standard" of each palo can be found on the successive recordings of Paco de Lucia. But ignoring that, there are some classics "hits" by other players (solo guitar I am talking about).

Rondena -Ramon Montoya
Rondena (modern)- "Oracion" by Manolo Sanlucar
Zapateado-Sabicas (en re)
Minera-Tomatito
Siguiryas-Nino Ricardo
Siguiryas(modern)-Nunez "Remache" low B tuning.
Solea por Bulerias-Nunez "Plaza de Arenal"
Solea por Bulerias (mi bemol)-Vicente Amigo
Taranta-Vicente Amigo
Fandango de Huelva-Rafael Riqueni
Alegrias (en Re)-Tomatito "La Ardila"
Columbianas-Tomatito
Tanguillo-Nunez
Solea-Chicuelo
Granaina-Sabicas
Granaina (modern)-Amigo/Nunez, can't decide.

For me, the different tonalites of bulerias give each a different "aire".
BULERIAS
por medio-Moraito, Tomatito (Tio Nino Miguel), Enrique del Melchor
La menor-Sabicas
C#-Vicente Amigo "Mandaito"
mi bemol-Nunez "Jucal"
Por Rondena-Nino Miguel
Por Rondena (modern)-Manolo Sanlucar "Tercio de Vara" (Nunez has 2 good ones also)
Classical or Waltz style-Escudero's "Impetu"
Classical/waltz (modern)-Nunez "Trafalgar", but also "Los Cano de la Meca", "amor de dios", "suite de la golondrina", and "Siempre es Tarde" by Nunez are great pieces also in this style. I'd say that is his forte.

When you said the best piece, everbody assumed it was the best guitar piece.

I suppose I go on a bit about this, but flamenco is cante, no?

What about Tomás Pavón, singing "Tengo el gusto tan colmáo", especially the last letra, soleá de Frijones. Acompañado a la guitarra por Melchor de la Marchena.

Sorry folks, just a little rant.

Well, we assumed it was not the best of cante for each palo, since YOU did not start the thread. And I assumed it was not the best danced palo, since dancing is not really music (footwork can be). But even still, my list has SOLO GUITAR specified.

So Sean, rather than "rant" , why not put your own definative list of the best CANTE version of each palo?

Sorin, it is called "Caminillo Viejo" from "Barrio Negra".

I agree...what's the point of berating a list of 90% guitar aficionados about its marginal use in flamenco? I don't think it's to educate us.

Admittedly still fairly new to Flamenco but I think Plaza Alta by PDL (on Almoraima) is an astounding Solea - the way it meanders along for about 3 mins and then suddenly takes off! Exciting stuff.

You guys I just got the dvd of Vicente live from Cordoba!!! for those of you who don't have it I must say that just the intro of Callejon de la Luna is worth the price of the dvd!!!! anyway I think the solea Cordoba is a very interesting and original interpretation of a solea, right now my favorite solea, you guys should give a listen to it if you haven't.

Ole, now there is a list!
I'd like to add Paquera for bulerias, Porrina for Fandango, and Maria Vargas Fandangos with Paco is amazing (a mi nino). And Paquera's Fandangos that turns into a bulerias (noche buena), know that one? And Caracol's fandango of course always good. (I like lot's of different fandangos). Malaguena by Terremoto jr is pretty powerful. There is one very special Siguiriyas live recording of Esperanza Fernandez. And Indio Gitano por Tangos. Aurora Vargas is good too por Tangos. Miguel Poveda does a great Granaina live, and Camaron always did a nice medlee of Cartagenera/Taranta/Minera etc....

I just stumbled on this thread.

I don't know about best and I won't go into it Palo for Palo but I vote that
"Mediteranean Sundance" should definitely be declared the Holy Grail of all Rumbas.

Just as Juan Martin gave so many their start with his instructional books, the Paco - Di Meola - Mcglaughlin album(s) stole a lot of fire from the Metal Shredders and converted them to nylon string players.

2nd place for best rumba "Entre dos Aguas."

Dude, the original Med sun IS Entre dos Aguas. Al di just composed that goofy intro, that's all, then they jam over Entre. Same form, am7 bm7 am7 B7 is al's part, then paco solos over Em,D,C,B. They don't even do the normal entre ending they go back to Al's goofy intro riff.

Unless you mean the live version which is a combo of Rio Ancho and Entre, again bookended by Al Di's signature riff. And Al's presence sort of kill the "rumbaness" of it cuz of how he does like rock guitar strumming. It is a fusion really.

A cooler fusion they do is "Chiquito" where they jam over Alegrias compas on some weird modern chord progression. The first true flamenco jazz "fusion" IMO.

i felt the same way. paco did awesome accompaniment while al was shredding. when it was paco's turn al just did that boring up-down crap. it kind of killed paco's solos, imo.

For those without a complete Sabicas collection and index to same: that’s from Flamenco Virtuoso, and is also included on his Grands Cantaores/Figures entry (Vol. 14)

not much interest to share so far? Maybe because it's difficult to say even a favourite among so many good songs
