Hi Estela,
I've been watching the whole of the broadcast festival since Sunday night, so relax, you're not alone!
Obviously I've been particularly interested in the "Guitarras Cantaoras" section, with Gerardo Nuñez, Diego del Moreno and friends.
Phew....One thing I can say is that Jerez certainly has a thriving "Left Bank" (or "Greenwich Village") community of very talented musicians and intellectuals!
Still.... good luck to them....I find it interesting and enjoyable, but not what I thought was Flamenco?
Then again..who am I to judge, being a Scotsman in deepest Scotland! LOL!

It was interesting the way that Diego del Morao rationalized his Bulerias to a straight 2/4 time that any young person in a Disco anywhere could tap their feet to.
Also I found I could hum "The Girl from Ipanema" on top of the Alegrias he played!
I'm certainly not implying that they were playing without compás.
On the contrary.
It is obviously so intuitive in these native Jerez musicians that they can hear Bulerias rhythm in a dripping tap.
Good funky beat. Maybe that's the road to the future?
Compás is definitely alienates the music to the casual foreign listener.
Anyway, and seriously....they are all first class musicians, with a brilliant technique and a really good Flamenco tone....but it's a wee bit over my head if you know what I mean?
Maybe it's just age.
I bet old Manuel Morao must be reaching for his tranquilizers right now, wondering if this is still his beloved Jerez or if he's just in the middle of some bad dream where the world has been taken over by Martians!
"Beam me up Terremoto!" LOL!

cheers

Ron

Ron, that's hilarious . I feel the same way and suggest you skip the 'bloody' (do Scots say that?) Guitarras Cantaoras and catch the cuadro shows...the 19th and 20th ought to be good. Don't expect too much from Paco Cepero tomorrow night either...I saw his sextet last year and it was a poor imitation of Paco de Lucia's.

Diego del Morao knows how to play for real, just like his dad. On another forum someone just wrote that between the two of them they are defining modern flamenco toque, while Gerardo is defining boredom. I couldn't agree more, on all counts.

HI Zata you are not alone I just came from Plaza de la Asuncion. I have been watching it live . I always go an hour earlier to get a seat. Some of the things I liked and some others not but definitely is much more amusing than Gerardo Nuñez. Specially those guys at the back playing palmas, Quino and company. They are great. I used to see them everyday in Santiago playing palmas. They don´t need a guitar to make a great show.

Hi Melchor:

It's funny how many people find Gerardo Núñez boring...something isn't right, no matter how great he is.

I also enjoyed some of tonight's show, but not all. The piano gets tiresome very quickly for me...sounds like someone imitating a guitar. Diego Carrasco is fun, sometimes a little over the top for my taste.

Estela.

I recall that the marketing hype for Manitas de Plata said he was "the best and most famous flamenco guitarist in the world". Such words do help sell tickets and LP’s or CD’s. I do not always agree with marketing departments.

Hi Melchor: I've decided to get down to Jerez on Saturday for the 'Venerables'...if you're in the Asunción, during the show I'll be in the small circular center of the plaza next to the sound technicians taking my pictures.

HI Estela it would be very nice to meet you on Sasturday but unfortunately my holydays are over and I have to come back to work tomorrow. But anyway after the concert tonight I am coming back with a very nice taste in my mouth (un buen sabor de boca). The atmosphere was incredible. You can tell the difference between Moraito and the others, as Ron says he is not a virtuoso but who cares, how many virtuosos are there in this world? It is the feeling what is really important. That is puro flamenco. I had been listening to his CD Morao y Oro over and over again, I am trying to learn his falsetas and now , being able to watch him live was incredible. I´ll be back for the festival in Teatro Villamarta. I hope to see you in Jerez, but not only you Emma, Fergus and some other friends are coming. This time I would like to meet some others from this forum like Ron , Jim Opfer or Simon. We could arrange another lunch with my crazy cousin.

Un saludo

Melchor

Sorry to hear you must leave Melchor...so instead of pescaito, it's back to fish n' chips. I'll definitely see you in Jerez next February and March for the festival and hope we can have that lunch with your "crazy cousin".
