After a good 12 years my AER amp died Got very hot and since has made the sound of what I imagine a sparrows fart would be Having gigs and no quick repair I went to the local audio production shop and asked for a good but cheap powered speaker. For $200 I walked out with an auro d208 200 watt 8 inch speaker Made by the Samson company ( the behringer of the behringer world ?)
Weird thing is I prefer it than my $1600 German amp I use a mackie 402 mixer and either a dpa 4099 or nuemann km184 Mics aside a decent small pa for $340 (mixer and amp)
The two way speaker thing is so much cleaner than any amp
The thing fits in a shopping bag Projects nicely and is based on the mackie thump series of speakers Light.. Played a few gigs, once using it as fold back as part of a show..the others as a main speaker, restaurant gigs.
Weird, you like it better than your AER? I wonder if it's because the amp sits on the ground (and AERs apparently need to be coupled with the ground) and the PA can fly and throw those high frequencies better. I use an AER Compact Mobile (battery powered, but the battery has run down and I will replace it this summer). I think it sounds very good. My 2nd PA is a QSC K10, a really incredible powered speaker somewhat similar to Mackies but a couple classes up.
I used to use a Samson Expedition Express. I believe it was meant to be a competitor to the Fender Passport series...... it kind of sucked! :)
I know someone who was selling a pair of K8s for $1000 here in Phoenix AZ.
you are right about the floor vs stand position the auro is a band aid/quick fix as i only had a few hundred dollars to find something that made a sound (i also borrowed an RCF 12' speaker) but pleasantly surprised so offered it for review for anyone looking for a cheap system
when my AER returns with its new transformer i will sell it (mobile60..overheated but great sounding amp) yep QSC is the the way to go for me, have already put some money on the K8 awesome units...well priced. great reviews...highly recomended by all the sound techs here should be mine in about 4 or so weeks
thanks for the affirmation
just think i may have outgrown the 'amp' sound...such a noticeable difference
RE: Auro D208 powered speaker (in reply to johnnefastis)
regarding the electro voice... no unfortunately..no out let in australia my experience with EV speakers in the past is they ae the sweetest sounding for acoustic guitar...far better than say a JBL Eon or Mackie for guitar in terms of 'natural' uncoloured sound... if you have the bucks go for the EV....a few hundred dollars less than the K8 a few hundred dollars more than Auro...[in comparison the Auro s out of that league]
Haven't heard them. I did my research on-line and compared a bunch of the powered boxes. The names that kept coming up were QSC and RCF for the 12s and 10s. The new EVs had some really good reviews, but not as many. Yamaha also came out with a newer box that had excellent reviews and seems to be at the same level as the QSC. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/yamaha-dxr12-12-active-speaker?src=3WWRWXGP
I was at a fair and for some reason they were using a QSC K12 on one side and a Mackie (not thump, the higher end one) on the other. By walking from side to side I could clearly compare the two, and the K12 totally outclassed it. I asked my wife (nonmusician) to compare them, and she said the K12 was much better and the other one sounded "fake"!
Got onto the retailer today They can order the EV but is $125 more then the QSC The Internet seems to say differently I think at the kind of volumes and styles we play would there be such a discerning difference? But agree with the 'fake' sounds contained in some speakers (which is why I thought the auro seemed ok ) Just not a fan of the JBL sound at all...
Guess as the EV is a special order it seems unlikely that I will be able to try both ..
Thanks everyone I ended up with the EV zxa1 Such a great sound from an 8 inch speaker Had I had more money and the desire to lug around a larger speaker the QSC K10 would be very tempting Both great speakers but felt EV had the 'warmth' in the 8 inch... Also found a good price.
Tried all speakers with a dpa 4099 and a nuemann km184 through a mackie desk
I also have a different guitar now so many new sounds to work with
In comparison the auro sounds like a toy but saved me for a few weeks and still think for $200 it will do for near acoustic type gigs
