RE: Golpeador (in reply to Flamingrae

For the record, I am back getting good results after ensuring that I topcoat with freshly prepared shellac solution, so I think I was right.

RE: Golpeador (in reply to constructordeguitarras

I would like to install a golpeador as a pickguard on my electric guitar. It has tru oil finish. I wonder if it will cause the golpeador any trouble to stick to it and if there will be trouble to remove it later on.

Is the golpeador attached by applying separate glue or is it usually already in the golpeador like on a sticker and what would be the best tool to cut it to correct shape?
Also, any tips where to buy a golpeador online in europe?

I would also be interested to know how well it sticks over Tru Oil, so please share your results here.

There are both kinds of golpeadors available. I get the sticky-backed kind from http://LMII.com and other people buy 0.011" thick Mylar and glue it on with thinned white glue.

I like to use the sticky-backed kind and I have found that if I cut a long straight edge on it with a knife, then that edge doesn't stick down as well as if I use scissors, so I just score it with the knife to get the straightness and then cut out the whole thing with scissors.

I found this European source with a Google search: http://schneidermusik.de/shop1/index.php?cPath=87_499_1000158&search_in_categories=1&language=en

There are two ways I know of for attaching the sticky-back kind. The way I prefer is to leave the covering over the sticky side and tape it in place along one long edge. Then I flip it over, using the tape as a hinge, and begin to pull off the covering from that edge. Then I flip it back to the normal position and start pressing the starting edge down, and pull some more of the covering off and press down some more until it is done.

Another way is to put a drop of liquid dish detergent in a cup of water in a spray bottle and lightly spray the area to receive the golpeador. Remove the covering from the sticky side and put the golpeador on the guitar. The water makes it possible to slide it around into the position you want. Squeegy it down and wipe up any water that is squeezed out. It will look terrible, but leave it overnight and it will look fine in the morning. Even on shellac.

I asked from fernandezmusic and he said it sticks to tru oil. Other than that, should I use white glue when applying golpeador to a tru oil or any other finish? As the golpeador doesnt have sticker surface.

By glue I meant "sticker surfaced golpeador".

If it doesnt stick its just a piece of plastic.. how can someone tell you that it will stick? I think the question is "what glue will make it stick?" because a piece of plastic has no "sticky-qualities" by itself, unless its somekind of static based thing.

I suppose I should have specified that the golpeador that sticks to true oil is the one fernandezmusic sells. The other golpeador, mine, has no sticker surface. Details...

Is it usually applied with white glue or something else?

Not really. Temporary pickguards are used all the time. They are held in place by static electricity I believe.

It seems like white glue should work with golpeador without pre applied glue but will it be possible to remove it with naphtha later on if needed?

Years ago picked a student guitar with Barba in Seville; It had no golpeador. I came back the next day, he installed a golpeador using withe glue, I took 4 to 5 days to dry complete clear. The guitar was lacquer.

A golpeador stuck on with white glue will be removable with a small amount of heat from a hair dryer. Not with naphtha.

Any tips where I can buy(preferrably in europe) a golpeador with pre-applied glue? The fernandezmusic asked alot for shipping and it came almost to 20 euros the total price.
