Gerardo's abanico example in Encuentro

I am just going through the abanico section in Gerardo Nuñez's encuntro and getting a bit confused.

At about 3 minutes into the Rasgueado section he shows a regular abanico pattern (P i a P i a) starting with i and then starting with P.

For the sake of working on it very slowly and to a metronome I transcribed it and figured that the one that starts with (i down) must be this as it seems to have this many strokes and ends with a P upstroke. But I am really not sure.

Anyone know if this is right, starting the rasgueo just after the beat ?

I think the other one that starts with P up is more straightforward... Like this.

Many thanks for your help.

Dont know if I got u right. It depends on which effect you want to get. Either p up is on the beat or i down is on the beat. Doesnt really matter how you start as far as you hit the beat. I think Gerardo showed both.

Thanks guys.
Elie I have the score and I think it's just showing
the basic idea and not how it is used in context.

I think my score must be right as it starts on a down
and ends like Doit says, on the beat with a P up.

Otherwise if a down was on the beat and it was triplets
it would end on P up just before the beat.

Anyway maybe this is just too much detail.

Thanks

I find these details are important.

Which type of finger stroke starts or ends a rasgeo will make a difference to aire and soniquete. Even when playing exactly the same written notes, varying details of finger combinations makes a significant difference.

(And of course details of starting and ending on fine subdivisions as well as on beats is important)

it's common enough.... just think of the ai downstrokes as pick-up notes to the next beat

You are correct but the important detail you are missing is how he (and other players) get INTO that off beat triplet. Watch the video again and notice how Gerardo does a golpe and i UPSTROKE to set you up on the contra beat for the one that starts a down. THere is a similar version where you just toss all the fingers down on the contra before count 8 which continues p up etc. GErardo doesn't show that one. Same deal with p am p, you need the contra beat after count 6 to start am down. When the contra beat is not expressed, (only the golpe or bass note on count 6) then you can start with the P up for any of those triplets right on 7.

It is also the same for the iai triplet that may start on "a" off beat for the same reasons as above.

Great.

I think I have got something solid to work on slowly now. + a load of other tips !

Previously I had always just started P up on 7 but always knew the pros were up to something else.

Hey Ricardo thats great, I am always amazed/impressed/worried how you know all these details so well. I did actually score that but thought it would be confusing to put it up.

Here it is. I think its right, but as its a triplet I guess technically the a down happens just before the contra.

Thanks so much everyone...... !
