robert johnson

robert johnson back in the day would hang around the juke joints and try and worm his way in to play with the likes of Son House and Willy Dixon who were the big names in blues at the time. They schooed him away, get out of here kid you cant play. this happened several times.
Robert disappeared from the juke joints for a couple years, came back and astonished everyone with how good he could play and his musicality. When asked where he was, he would either say the wood shed, [coing a blues term] or the crossroads. People assumed he meant he went to the cross roads and sold his soul to the devil to be able to play.
Thus was born the legend. learning point, never give up when some one tells you cant play or arent good enough.

Not as cool as G W Bush's severed head cameo, on Game of Thrones, Keith.

guitarbuddha--the link was on msn and yahoo the day of my post. my insertion was more sharing a news story and not editoral; that is, not equating obama with satan.

Keith I'll accept that this was not a deliberate attempt at malice.

The fact that Yahoo and MSN featured this open invitation to racism as 'News' is distressing. It goes beyond bad taste.

I often looked at my early young time spent with the guitar (12-16 years old) felt very much like giving up a huge chunk of my social life. I went through another similar period in College when I started switching from electric guitar to aucoustic and ultimately began flamenco. Those times were very lonely but very important. You do feel a bit like trading a part of your soul or life to do that work alone, but later the rewards are there. I am glad I did the woodshed thing at those times rather than when I was very young playing with friends outside or much older when i would have been working a day job.

Ricardo, I think most guitarists don't consider it a sacrifice because they actually don't have anything better to do!

I sure don't---laundry, handywork, cooking, cleaning, shopping, babysitting top the list!

Sacrifice? It never occurred to me that playing 6-10 hours a day was even considered practice. I always played the guitar because it was fun, the same reason I now play piano 2 hours a day. I have to restrict it to 2 hours to allow time for working in the shop and chores.

At the ages Ricardo's talking about that IS a sacrifice. A lot of socializing happens at those ages.

Hmmm...I switched to flamenco guitar my fisrt year in college just like Ricardo and don't feel like I missed much of anything although I probably only played 3-4 hours a day at that time.
