Same thing on Tomatito's "Pa Salinas", toward the end. Haha.

And if you listen REALLY hard, you can hear the click to ansaphone, with a voice leaving a message..

'Vicente ?.. Orbis Elevators here..we heard your new album and wondered if we could license a special "flamenco'y" version of it, because it's a bit too muzaky for us as it stands...'

Seriously, Vicento probably thinks that his talents are wasted focussing only on the flamenco community, and lots of people out there would love to hear(and pay for) his talent, and he's probably right.

^^ I have to check that Tomatoto "glitch" hehe

And yes, now that you are saying that manicfingers. I hear the same. :)

Just go and listen to the CD not just inbackground. Pay attention to it. And go through 10times. When you just listen once u only remember the catchy melodies, but it has all.. also pretty crazy playing. Man, I really do like that album!

I really like this album, too.

and I never understood which relationship could exist between the value any music has for me personally and the name it might be given in terms of "type of music" like "flamenco", Jazz", "Worldmusic" or whatever..... I couldnt care less about names as its not the names and categories I like or dont like when listening to music.

The only thing I personally could criticize is that on this album there a lot of "already several times heard, very typical Vicente Amigo- passages". Its 100% Vicente Amigo in my opinion and not that much new. And this is good and also not so good...

RE: Vicente's new album "Tierra... (in reply to suniram

yeah the problem is our expectations, there's nothing wrong with the album...
except that when he plays flamenco it's nothing new, seems like he's recycled his ideas, and that was also a problem on his previous album...
maybe the next one will be something that'll blow us away...

Dammit. Now im starting to get worried, because i have his autograph on my guitar. I dont want to be in a position where i have to say "yeah thats Vicente Amigo's autograph... he used to play flamenco, you know?"

I really like it

It's probably not really flamenco, for the most part.

I don't really care though.

Theres a Zapateado, Tangos, Bulerias...etc.. open ur ears, hear flamenco.

The most interesting part of flamenco is its quick evolution. If you like standing still.. go listen classical stuff (the modern classical guitar is more if you need a vomiting-trigger...so I suggest "real old classics"). ;)

I like it! The Bulería is awesome. Don't care about if it's flamenco or not but I do listen to other music-genres like Blues, Jazz and Rock, even if flamenco is this kind of music i love the most.
The most important thing for me is that music can touch me and let me forget about things around me.
I like that celtic-touch and his playing is breathtaking, everytime, don't matter what he plays.

Although i'm a bit disappointed that we can't hear a nice Soleá, Taranta or Rondena. No solo-piece.

Why does all modern flamenco go THAT direction, why easy listening jazzy, 'cus Paco did it? Someone needs to go metal with it. No added instruments or anything just really aggressive that would be awesome.

Lenador.... Alfredo Lagos has kind of tried it... There's a track on his "Metamorphoses" album named "Estudio sobre la Distortion", where he plays a Taranta (if my memory serves me well!) with a lot of distortion!! :-D

Has anyone started transcribing the new stuff from Vicente?! I have a bit of "Rio de la Seda" down already... more to follow (hopefully!).

Saludos!!

Its not all modern that does this. I mean there is modern stuff which is not easy listening at all. But one thing strikes me pretty hard is that ALL the top players did some collaboration with other styles of music. Especially Jazzy chords and improvising over a chord progression seem to have a strong effect on many flamencos. Maybe because Paco? Dont know. Ricardo, what is your opinion on this? Ok i will give it a try. I think that flamenco can be very rigid in terms of what to play when. I mean mainly accompaniment and in the past days i think solo guitar was also limited in its means of composition and form. Players who accompanied their lifelong with the same chords and the same forms probably see alot of freedom compared to that in Jazz or other music.
I mean Paco even emigrated from Spain to Mexico... wasnt it because of that reason he wanted to escape?

The thing that I dont like about the jazzy mixes is that even players like Tomatito seem to cram chords just for the sake of variation without paying much attention to voice leading.. it ends up sounding like short clusters of sound that go nowhere.

I know, I love Pedro Sierras album to pieces. I think I might be just a purist. I don't want synths in my metal either

Good point, maybe flamenco and jazz is a marriage made in hell.

...but I don't know if you're going to get flamencos to learn figured bass and voice leading.

thank you, i could not find it under his name alone, but came up when i searched 'Vicente Amigo Tierra'. I made a devoted playlist, just to listen to this album carefully.

I was so disappointed when I listened to 'Roma' ... but before I rend my garments in grief and rage, i suppose i should doubt my own ability to appreciate his work [one way to give the benefit of the doubt or that proverbial grain of salt].

I read, of course, all the posts and arguments against and in favor. And what i am left with is the inevitable respect i have for an artist that has inpsired me immensely with his previous work. On the other hand, i fear that he is not living up to the high bar he himself had set.

However, as i said, i will now listen to it a few times before i dismiss it [as i would do with any new set of strings; i would keep it on for a few days, maybe a week, before calling it a failure or success].

folks did you ever listen to "Rio de la seda"?
I mean that bulería is completeley awesome, a good reason to buy the album and give it a chance..

And this album has nothing to do with jazz,
don't say that, that's just wrong.
I mean, i don't play jazz when i use some "jazzy" chords or play flamenco when i use some "spanishy" chords.

I actually really like it. The more I listen to it, more layers ascend and the music becomes much deeper. It's also a very well produced album, especially the sound, mastering and ofcourse Vicente's playing is superb.
It's not the most 'innovative flamenco' album of Vicente but its' absolutely not 'easy listening' music.
It's one of the few albums where flamenco and other musical styles are actually very good mixed and blended into a new form of music.

Personally, I like it that Vicente tries something new instead just go on with the endless Phrygian dominant Andalusian chord cycles, which makes me lose my interest in flamenco music in the first place.

Though I can imagine that if you expected a traditional 'solo guitarist' flamenco album you might be really disappointed.

Ive been listening to the album today.

To me, this and the first one (..Aire) are his best ones to be heard as albuns. His other albuns are flooded with things that annoy me and half-assed compositions.

Very cool album.

for those with Spotify...

how are you getting it in the US? If I try to play it here.. it says "Unavailable in the United States" :

http://open.spotify.com/track/32BHwmA7Hrz9WfIlfhb4d1

do you have a different HTTP link where you can play it?

interesting phenomenon...

I had the entire album on spotify, and listened to it a number of times since i last posted. However, i went to check now -to reply to you- and only one track is left available, Roma !!

I guess Vicente had it there as a tease for a few days, and now wants us to go buy the album... a marketing stratagem that, i am afraid, failed to impress me.

I am actually against this spotify thing. It is ok i guess for out of print or public domain music but royality of 1 cents for new musical pieces is disgusting to me. I am relieved if he or someone associated was able to get it off the streamers quickly. Youtube is bad enough.
