Paco de Lucia cut a nerve in his finger while fishing and the doctor said he would not recover, but he did. I'm sure you will recover, hombre. I'll send you my tiger hat to help if you want. Are you back in Nashville?

You'll be a'right. I had one of those. I'm surprised they said so long for recovery.

You hear about the Swedish woman on the Australian Open who was bit by a Black Widow spider? She grabbed a golf tee and slashed the wound open and drained a clear liquid from it and managed to finish her round.

One of the comments in the news feed was: Dangerous spider bite, open wound with golf tee, suck out poison, continue with day, Australian for "Walk it Off".

I know a guy who broke both wrists and still kept playing guitar professionally. You'll be back at it soon.

You're actually lucky you got a good doctor. Usually cracker doctors in the South will hit you with a bible to cure that.

Watch these boneheads:

you can hit ganglions with a book, but they come back again. Better to have it removed

Now don't forget to tell the pretty ladies that was the result of a knife fight that you got into. You gave those 5 guys a beating but unfortunately one of them left you with that scar.

Be patient man, you'll be fine soon.

More follow-up to show the bleeding under the skin. Blood seen under the skin after being there for some time & getting metabolized becomes of this color & no longer red...

Comparing right to left forearm/hand...

Hope it's healing up well Ramzi, I can imagine you feel frustrated from having to rest your hand and keep you away from the guitar, and maybe interfering with your studies.
I hope you do not have the same misfortune as myself, allways injuring myself and complicating my life and comes in the way of my interests, but if it is bad it only makes the climb to mastery or perfection even more interesting and you will have earned it even more.

Anyways, I hope it works out, and I have observed that you have a great strenght and courage in you, so I have no doubt it will work out for you!

Best wishes and good recovery!

RE: Rombsix goes under the knife... (in reply to rombsix

‘feel better dear Rombsi[ck]….

I too had my share of hand injury a few years back and I appreciate what a nightmare it is for anyone who, like us, is pathologically addicted to playing guitar incessantly.

In one of his many illuminating recommendations [and each I always treasure] Ricardo suggested that I should seize the opportunity to practice my ‘right hand’ techniques; [my injury was on the index finger of my LEFT hand]. So I kept a loose capo on the fingerboard to mute the strings and practiced arpeggios, tremolo, rasgueos, etc. I must report that the incident helped me improve my right hand dexterity significantly. Since, I occasionally force myself to practice that way, even though my left hand has fully recovered.

Anyway, make the best out of it, there is always something to learn from or out of a ‘curve ball’. ‘look forward to you recovering and playing [as always] in your most entertaining fashion.

Dearly,

I am now able to type a bit better than before so I will answer your questions and reply to some of your comments:

Flamencito: I had a dorsal ganglion cyst which was getting worse with time (pain on use of my hand / wrist for guitar and daily activities). I decided to have it surgically removed.

Orsonw: I was feeling pretty disgusted with the guitar so I haven't touched it for about 3 weeks now. However, I am starting to miss it now so I think soon I will start working on right hand techniques as you suggested.

BarkellWH: What world to conquer next? Perhaps playing guitar left-handed.

constructordeguitarras: Still in Beirut. Will be back in Nashville early in March.

GuitarVlog: No formal physical therapy, but I was told to keep moving my fingers and try to use a stress ball.

OK, you have just reminded me of someone I have not thought about in a long time. Elizabeth Cotton was a sharecropper's daughter who taught herself to play the guitar left handed. She was definitely unique, as she played a right-hand guitar left-handed, with normal tuning and strung for right-handed playing. It was not re-strung for left handed playing. Thus, she played the bass strings with her fingers and the trebles and melody with her thumb. Her alternating bass was known as "Cotton-picking." Elizabeth Cotton sang blues and folk, and she wrote the famous song "Freight Train" that every folk singer who ever lived has recorded. Quite a lady.

Cheers,

Bill

The Gipsy Kings often play that way but they are mostly strumming block chords... If anything, I would flip the strings. The reason I bring this up is that I feel my hand is going to be taking quite a bit of time to recover...

Here is some follow-up. I am thinking of this thread as a reference to show a case of how things unfold after someone has an open excision of a dorsal ganglion cyst. I hope nobody has to go through this, but in case someone does, this documentation might provide some information from a personal experience point of view (with photos and video) rather than from medical literature.

View the video in HD 720p for best experience.

The photos were kept large in size (even if they make the thread ugly due to having to scroll) to maintain best viewing quality and detail.

Cheers!

Hey Ramzi your hand is looking good, I hope it doesn't hurt too much.

The video doesn't work, can you upload it again please?

I think it should work in a few hours. The file I uploaded was quite large in size, so I expect YouTube is being sluggish in processing it. If it is not working 12 hours from now, I'll re-upload it.

Cheers!

PS: The hand does still hurt, but I have to say less so than before. I have a good deal of work to do though if I plan on recovering my range of motion, at least to a better one than present if not all the way back to normal.
