Beautiful documentary, thank you Dionisio

This is a documentary about Tomas Luis de Victoria [1548 – 1611], a Spanish composer of sacred music known by many as the best composer of the entire renaissance period. I'm not catholic but this music is really impressive (I believe in God though), and I'm captivated by how, we humans, can do really magnificent things.

Enjoy. (I highly recommend to use a good pair of headphones)

Spanish Renaissance (around. 1400 - 1600)

God's Composer - Tomás Luis de Victoria

That was sublime, Castelat! He truly was God's composer.

Here is the late Montserrat Figueras with Hesperion XXI (I'm not sure how far back this music dates):
This piece is hauntingly beautiful:

Wow, you are correct, very beautiful indeed!, haven't heard this one, thanks. I think it belongs to the late medieval to mid renaissance, probably Sephardic (Jews who lived in Spain), I'm gonna do some research though, I need the lyrics.

Thanks Dionisio I'll take a look at it. I've Listened to that song some more times, and I realized that it doesn't have lyrics, haha.

Spanish Medieval (circa. 500 - 1400)

Cantiga 191 "O que de Santa Maria sa mercee ben gaanna" - King Alfonso X, the Wise. (El Sabio)

Cantiga 78 "Non pode prender" - King Alfonso X, the Wise.

This medieval song which I believe have Andalusian influence might be one of the roots of flamenco clapping.

Spanish Renaissance (1400 - 1600)

En la ciudad de Toledo - Anonymous

En la ciudad de Toledo,
y en la ciudad de Granada,
allí se ha criado un mancebo
que Diego León se llama.

Era alto de cuerpo,
morenito de su cara,
delgadito de cintura,
mozo criado entre damas.

De una tal s'enamoró,
de una muy rica y galana,
se miran por una reja,
también por una ventana.

Y el día en que no se ven,
no les aprovecha nada,
ni les aprovecha el vino,
ni el agua de la mañana.

Si d'amor pena sentis - Anonymous

Si d'amor pena sentís,
por mesura i por bondat,
cavalleros, si a Francia is,
por Gayferos preguntad. (x2)

Dezilde por nueva çierta
como me quieren casar,
mañana hago mis bodas
con uno d'allende la mar. (x2)
