alhambra 4f a good beginner guitar?

Hi everyone! I am relatively new to the forum but just wondering what people's opinions are on the alhambra 4f as a beginners flamenco guitar? It has sycamor back and sides (laminated) and solid spruce top I believe. The strings need to get changed soon so I was also wondering if anyone has had experience with this model and what strings they use to get the sound they want?

I have a 4f Alhambra and actually happy with it, Its not superior but not that bad
check my channel to hear how it sounds :

Cool! I don't mind the 4F - it was the best sounding guitar in my price range and the more I play it, the better it sounds. The colour is very flamenco too!

I read your post - I was able to compare the 3F and 4F, 4P and 7FP all at the same time. Although I liked the sound of the 7FP, it didn't have enough punch. The 3F wasn't to my taste either.

I have ordered some Hannabach strings so I will give them a go!

i agree with Elie [ he makes it sound great]
i have had a 4F pass through my hands twice...between students...and is a good entry level instrument...never had an issue selling them on...
however if you look at the specs between the 3 and 4F the only difference is the the colour, ebony fretboard and tuners...same guitar otherwise...still they feel better than the 3f...
if you are in Melbourne Australia i do recomend looking up Pierre Herrero at Guitars Online..
i recently picked up an Azahar entry level guitar and found it a bit 'more flamenco' in sound and setup...lower action at string to soundboard and 12th fret...
raspier and dryer tone...lighter construction..looks pretty good too...

to me it sounds and feels a bit more flamenco than the 4f as a comparison and is $400 cheaper...
he also stocks Camps guitars as well as some student Conde's at around $2000+ ...
still not much in it at this price range

the only link i can find for the 131

Hi AlVal -

I got my guitar through Pierre and yes I heard the Azahar aswell. I wasn't overly impressed with it though..could have just been that individual guitar?

It's always a hard choice in this price range...but it is just a means to an end..
But I guess the Alhambra came up trumps for you...the search engine here has heaps of threads on this topic...http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=14811&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=beginners%2Cguitar&tmode=&smode=&s=#14811
So many choices...but we are pretty limited in Australia as to what we can try...which is why Pierre is such a good resource
the Alhambra is as good as it gets for the money...

we tried these
Luthier Blue30 or Red20 sounded good on this guitar
LaBella 820B's
Hannabach 828MT

beware of OSD obsessive string disorder but its worth trying a bunch of them..again many threads in the search http://www.foroflamenco.com/searchpro.asp?topicreply=both&message=both&timeframe=%3E&timefilter=0&top=300&criteria=AND&minRank=10&language=single&phrase=strings

sure there are other brands but these all sounded good...the hannabach's seemed to break D strings regularly unlike the others

congrats on the guitar

Thanks for the advice - I think I'm a bit too new at this to have OSD!!! I haven't had the guitar long enough to even change the strings yet but they are getting a bit tarnished and ragged in spots now so should probably start to think about it.

I know you can't compare it to a handmade flamenco guitar (and give me about 2-3years and I'll start shopping around for one) but for a complete novice it seems to be a nice guitar. My teacher thinks it should serve me well for the next few years and I could use it for accompaniment and gigs if neccessary.

I have the silver Luthier strings on it at the moment - Pierre restrings all the guitars he imports with these as he thinks they are good strings. I think they are but would like to explore different strings to see how they affec the sound and my playing.

Check out Katoh flamenco guitar for a cheap beginner instrument. It's RRP for 450 I think. I'm sure you can get a 10-20% discount.
I really like the feel of it. I bought the Yamaha cg171sf for my beginner guitar and really regret not knowing about Katoh when I bought the yamaha. Check 2-3 out, because sometimes they use different bridges on it, and although the string height at bridge is still the same, the one with the lower bridge would be more useful if you want to lower the action in the future if the neck moves.. Melbourne Acoustic Centre (I think that's the name) carries it.

I think for my next guitar I'm going to go with something a little more advanced but for the moment the 4F is serving it's purpose quite well for me.

I would love to hear opinions on this guitar (good or bad experiences) and also what strings people have used with this guitar....hopefully a few people have :)
