I do agree that if some people want to talk about RD or his guitars they should feel free to do so. It's not against any formal rules. However, this is the Wild Wild Internet and you should expect some backlash on this topic, especially here - that cannot be prevented unless Simon or one of the mods wanted to strictly control the threads. That's life, just carry on with your discussion. If you can't handle the backlash, talk about it in private or take it to another forum.

I'm loving the food discussion, but I'm done with this thread. I'll start a new thread this weekend when I make my first homemade Sugo.

Why doesn't someone (or Diaz himself) start a RD/Andalusian Guitars forum? Instead of alienating the members of other forums the discussions could be centralized in a spot where people who actually want to discuss those topics can feel free to do so. Just a thought.

Antonio could make a cheap Yamaha sound like a world class instrument...
and noone expects him to say anything bad about those guitars when he knows he's being recorded, that's pretty obvious...
as for Ruben's students and owners of these guitars, they're always welcome here...the problem is with Ruben's short sightedness and lack of respect for differing opinions (even when they're obviously right and backed up with evidence), he's a great player and probably a good teacher too, noone doubted that ever...(i must add though, from what i've heard, he's a really poor composer

)

Call it what it is, an infomercial for Ruben and andalusion guitars.
Sir Spamalot has been kicked off six forums that I know of, which speaks volumes.
Yojimbo was listening to that little devil on his shoulder telling him to post these infomercial videos, he knew he was farting loudly in an elevator; to feign complete innocence, would no doubt set off the bvllshit meter.

Members should not feel bad about owning or posting their own videos using these guitars, just like anyone else. Punishing innocent people for someone else's stupidity, makes little to no sense.

A promo tool for Sir Spamalot, is not something the majority of the members here want this forum used for.
Don't worry there is plenty of Ruben to be had on youtube, if you need your fix.

I hate discussing it but I have to admit that Ruben's business model intrigues me. To me it makes absolutely no sense (which is why I am not in business of selling goods). I believe that no-name brand products are always sold at a cheaper price. And here comes Andalusian guitars, which by 'guitars' standards is totally a no-name product, since you don't know where they are from (at least not officially) and you don't know who makes them.
So you have a no-name product model but the pricing scheme is one of luthier price guitars....two things that don't match. And yet, some people are willing to spend $3k for such a guitar when they could by one from a luthier (a known, real person) for the same price.

Then again I don't know how well their sales are doing. For sure no-name at high price = larger profits, so you don't need spectacular sales to make money.

In the end no words of praise really matter...if you want the guitar for real you have no choice but to buy it or trade for it. Accepting a free guitar does not say anything really.

True, I always found it difficult to gauge the truth of Spaniards enthusiasm, specially flamencos from Andalucia. But in this case Antonio knows who Ruben is, he knows he is being videotaped gushing about his guitars and that it will be used for promotional purposes for the whole world to see, why would he do that?

I have a theory about those guitars - I posted it some time ago but I'll do it again.

My theory is that a high valuation is placed on the guitars so that when they are 'granted' to someone, a large tax deduction can be claimed. I should also say that I have no idea on whether this is actually happening - this is pure speculation on my part.

Others have said they don't like his business model. I tend to agree that spamming websites and pissing off the members isn't the best way to build relationships in the guitar world; however, on the other hand Ruben is swamped with students. He teaches 6-8 hours a day (sometimes longer) every day of the week including weekends. He's been on his local TV station 3 times since moving to Malaga, he's participated in shows and he's run day long guitar clinics in neighbouring towns. Whether you like his approach or not, it's paying off in that he's making a pretty decent income from his guitar.

This sometimes happens in the art world when a piece of art is appraised by an expert and given a higher value than it has previously had in the open market. A notable example happened at the Boston Fine Arts museum many years ago when a Sung dynasty Chinese landscape painting was appraised by an in house curator for far beyond it's market value. Then once the higher value was established the private owner donated the picture to the museum for a larger tax write off.

Both the donor and curator/museum were exposed in an investigative journalism essay. This practice is considered unethical and dishonest.

Well tonight I made the Alfredo sauce ad I added pinch of cumin. It was a nice touch.

Holy crap am I full~! I made it for four of us. I used a good Chilean cabernet instead of chardonnay, I had none, and the sauce was pretty good. Although I can see where a white wine might be better. Oh lord I used heavy cream, butter and parmesean cheese in copious amounts.

This DOES appear to be a rather shameless 'lovefest' for these guitars. I too, am struck by a rather 'plastic' tone which appears to somehow lack nuance and complexity.
On another note, I love Rey, but am left rather cold by 'jazzy' chords and typewriter, lightning-fast picados. I did take one 'lesson' from him and he loved my 'Conde.' I was WAY out of my element, but my tastes run more towards Diego del Gastor!

Another even better garlic/seafood dish is cigalas: I dont know what these are called in English, perhaps Dublin Bay prawns or Norway lobsters. These are delicious fresh: they lose texture when frozen.

Remove the heads and retain the claws. cut trough the underbelly of the shell with scissors and open the cigala with a knife. Remove the black tube: it is the alimentary canal. Now all you have to do is put them in a saucepan with olive oil and lots of garlic.

Remove the meat from the claws (somewhat tedious). This is delicious to eat, but with a thick béchamel sauce and some chopped up langostinos, it makes great croquetas.

cigala is a word used in Portugal a lot , maybe your are near the border , it is a kind of saltwater cray fish thing .....not as big as a lobster but bigger than a prawn ... i dont know what it is in English exactly .. you can BBq them as well ...

I don't think we have a shellfish like cigala on the US Pacific coast. I will check...but I've lived here all my life and I think would have heard about it.

We have freshwater crawfish, I have gathered them from deep streams using a snorkel and mask in summer. They cook up pretty much the same way cigala cooks. But now I want to cook the cigala.

You are making me hungry. I'll tell you my favorite crustacean: Tiger prawns, which are found in Malaysia and Thailand. Tiger prawns are huge, and if you buy them at the outdoor stalls in Phuket, Thailand, for example, and have them barbecued over a grill, they are absolutely delicious with butter and lemon sauce and some chilli.

I saw Cigala, the singer not the crustacean, in Berkeley. I thought his hands and the way he held his hands was very lobsterish. But overall his performance was slathered in too much butter and a bit too sweet. Perhaps if he could cut back on the molasses in the recipe, or add some orange juice to sweeten instead of sugary syrup...

Try Pan de la Casa: lightly toast good quality white bread, rub well with garlic, cover generously with extra virgen olive oil, then grated ripe tomato. Finally cover with jamon de pata negra, drizzle on some more oil, some freshly ground black pepper and 30 secs under a hot grill. Drink manzanilla.

Kirkland Prawns, 27.00 I could fly to Thailand for that price.

This is the Spiny Lobster we get in So. Cal and Baja...does Cigala look like this or does it have claws? These eat pretty well in tacos with rice and beans after a day of surfing.

With the onset of cold weather, I got to thinking about a soup I used to have once in a while in Madrid: sopa castellana. Very tasty, cheap and easy to make, and it's excellent when you're cold and hungry.

Start by making a broth from a chicken skeleton. Sounds weird but I don't know another word for it. It's what's left after removing feathers, skin, guts, head, feet and meat. Butchers sell them. You make a broth with water, the skeleton, a carrot, a leek and some parsely. Takes only 10 minutes in a pressure cooker, probably 30 minutes in a normal pot. In a pan, brown plenty of garlic (be careful to brown it just a little over a low flame) along with high-quality jamón and chorizo cut up into bits, and add the strained broth to the pan. Stir in a good amount of paprika (not the spicy-hot variety), being very careful not to put in too much (I used a rounded teaspoon for about four servings). Throw in some slices of bread that you've browned on both sides in the oven and break them up a bit with a fork or something. Add salt to taste and let it boil for at least 15-20 minutes. Serve each dish with a poached or fried egg on top.
