WTB - Intro guitar

Hi All,

New to the forum and thought this might be a good place to look. I'm looking for an intro level guitar (around £400-£500 UK to spend). I'd like to avoid a new one if I can. I'm currently a classical player of quite a few years and would like to dip my toes in with a truer Flamenco guitar.

If anyone has something available just let me know!

Cheers

Johnny

colmans--here in the usa yamaha consistently gets good reviews for their entry level flamenco guitars and i would bet the same holds true in your neck of the woods. they are relatively inexpensive yet good and consistent which is something rare among factory guitars. as for used guitars--check the bay. the lucida 797 usually gets good reviews and there is one here at the forum. it lives in the southern usa and since you mention pounds as the prefered monetary unit i suspect you live in the u.k. so there is the shipping issues to address.

Yeah, all the Yamaha's I've tried seem decent & consistent for the price. A friend of mine has $300 Cordoba that shocks the hell out of me, though I have not been as impressed with others, it may be a fluke.

colmans--having lunch and thought i would see what the u.k. bay looks like. there is a cashimira for 600 pounds (forgot to look at the shipping cost), a navarro for 500 pounds and 78 pounds shipping and another navarro with a conde headstock for 592 pounds and 78 pounds shipping. for a higher end entry level guitar the navarros also have a very solid reputation. you could stay pretty close to budget and get a very nice higher end entry level guitar from navarro.

Guys,

You mention the Yahama Flamenco guitar being consistent...

I remember the older versions being great, but, what about the current version?? The one that is done in a matte type finish...

Thanks guys,

All very useful! I had looked at the Navarro as they seem to have a great reputation for their price.

I was even tempted to step up to the concert version as I'm going to have to pay for the delivery and taxes either way.

Maybe better for a longer term investment to start with?

Cheers

I've played a Navarro, they're great. If you can get one for 500 pounds I'd jump all over it. I was very close to buying one myself direct, I was going to drive down and see a friend near by in morelia and pick it up directly. Ended up getting a steal on craigslist though.

colmans,

Although I personally wouldn't buy a guitar before I have played it first, if you keep checking on eBay, every now and again some reputable guitars come up which fit your budget. A few days ago an Amalio Burguet 2F went for just above £400.

Good luck.

Navarro guitars, will cost a additional £100 at least (we pay 20% VAT tax), then you'll have postage (£80) and 'other costs' which can be about £40 odd, so the costs do add up and Navarro guitars are not quite as cost effective for consumers on the other side of the pond....

To the OP, there's a Alhambra 7F reduced from £849 to £295 (I think, it's about that) in London Guitar Studio (which is right near Bond Street Tube Station). They had that guitar in the shop window on Thursday evening, it's not on the website though.

The old Yamaha was the 171SF. Very good - for its category. The new matte finish is the replacement for the 171SF - the 172SF. It looks terrible and doesn't sound anywhere near as good as the original 171. I wouldn't recommend the 172.

As Ramon says the new ones are not nearly so good as the old ones.
You could always have a look on the big auction site in case there are any floating around. It might be an option

I've bitten the bullet....the great big auction site in the sky was not looking too great so I've jumped in with a Concert Navarro. It made a bit more sense than the student if I was paying the delivery fees etc anyway.

So fingers crossed it all works out well..

Are you ordering it from Francisco and having it shipped to the UK? You are biting the bullet, at least compared to what you were initially saying you wanted to spend......

Can you post back with when you get the guitar? I'm kind of tempted by a FN guitar too, the Palo Escrito one but I'm a worried by the shipping and stuff... (I'm in the UK too)

Yep, I went a step up from the original budget. I've done it before with classicals and been less inspired to play them at the entry level so I've jumped a step up!

I bought it through Ron at memorial. A nice price helped sway me. Sometimes you've got to grab the opportunity and bite the bullet!

tijeretamiel, I'll let you know when it arrives. If you need anymore details just send me a message.
