RE: Carlos Pina Flamenco Blanca (in reply to heavymellow

What the hell is a toneright?!? I checked their website, and it seems to be a small device that sends some kind of high frequency tone into the guitar
so that you dont have to play it that much??? I really like the process of my guitar opening up by playing it myself every day!!
Imagine taking one of those Paco pills(discussed recently on the forum) and using this little playing the guitar byitself device....
No need for practice anymore, SUCCES GUARANTEED!!

I´m really sorry, im not trying to offend you, but what is going to be next???

Guitar looks nice by the way.. howmuch do you want for it?

RE: Carlos Pina Flamenco Blanca - $800 (in reply to heavymellow

Wow! At $800 why don't you just go ahead and give it away? That's sure a lot of guitar for $800. You better think this one over! This should make someone damn happy. You may want to post some more info though, (scale length, nut width and so on). Considering any trades? :)

RE: Carlos Pina Flamenco Blanca - SOLD (in reply to heavymellow

Well, unfortunately this guitar didn't work out for me. It had problems with the frets coming up, the saddle not fitting properly, and most seriously the first 7 frets seemed to not be put in straight. They were at an angle, so the treble side played a bit sharp. That took a bit of time to figure out, at first all I knew was that it wasn't tuning up quite right. Close, but not quite right. Now I am pickier about my tuning being perfect than many people are, so this might not be as big of a problem for someone else as it was for me. Vincent (heavymellow) hadn't noticed the problem for example.

In the end the situation worked out alright though. When I took it to a luthier, he said basically that the fret problem would take a lot to fix, so I ended up returning it to Vincent for a refund.

I speculate that Carlos Pina might have sold this guitar at a discount because of this problem, and as it was passed around that info was not included. So for future reference of prospective buyers, as shown in the photos the label says this was Carlos Pina's flamenco model, number 111, made in 1999. The guitar does have a rather nice tone, so it might still be great for someone. The frets coming up and saddle problems might not be too hard to fix. I think Vincent said he played with a capo usually, and I suspect that might make the skewed frets less of a problem: if you tuned with the capo on, you could compensate for the problem while playing on the first 7 frets.

Wild, you mean that they are not 90 degree perpendicular to the neck, as if I would measure from the nut to the fret, the length would be different on the top side then it would on the bottom side? That is pretty bad work.
Made me look for who Carlos Pina was and only found some text on GSI about being from Paracho:
Carlos Pina is one of the most respected and sought-after makers from Paracho, Mexico.
He slipped on that one ;) but sought-after can man different things.

Yep, wild is about right. You have hit the nail on the head with your example by the way. And I believe the angle of the slant was identical for the first 7 frets. Another interesting point is that it seems the problem was noticed after the first 7, and the 8th fret was put in with a bit of a curve in it to correct the problem. That is, since the treble side had been too high, he curved the treble side of the 8th fret back just a hair to get both ends of the fret at the right spot. I'm unsure what the advantage of a curve is over just a straight fret at the correct angle. Maybe a sudden correction would be more noticeable somehow. After that all the frets were put in straight.

I also had read that he was a respected and sought-after maker, so I can only assume that this must be a substandard instrument. Who knows, maybe he had an assistant work on this one...
