Thank you Shawn,
If I'd know I'd live to 70 I'd have taken better care of myself

2006 Marquez de Riscal with Point Reyes bleu cheese and home made pizza. A once a year splurge.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words.

Just to get back on a proper topic, what I did on my birthday was glue some cross grain on a back, resaw some pieces of spruce for tentallones, carve the heel and foot on a neck and mark out a maple back and sides for resawing today. The last 1 1/2 hours in the shop were devoted to playing piano. For me that was a fun day.

Alright John, being that you brought it up, tell us about this masterful creation you are making with the maple back and sides.

I always love hearing/ watching you guys talk about your work, and I can't get enough of that. You rarely tell us what your building though. Your one of those fellows of few words and lots of actions. :)

P.S
When I head up to Portland I'm going to stop in and give you a piano tuning for your birthday, that is if the piano needs tuned at that time. I'll have my tools with me anyhow because I have to keep up my in-laws piano... If nothing else you'll probably have a few unisons that are getting squirrelly.

Actually we just received a stack of wood from the estate of a craftsman/woodworker who lived in a little town called Monroe. He wanted the wood to go to another woodworker and somehow we were selected. He had built some violins and obviously had selected these pieces of maple for that use. Fortunately they are large enough to yield at least two guitar sets. Since the wood is so perfectly quartered and completely cured I thought we'd build a maple blanca in his honor. We're going to use some Bubinga for the overlay and bindings and Padauk for the bridge taken from other planks from his shop. We haven't built a maple guitar in many years but these pieces of wood are so lovely that it was an easy decision.

Happy birthday mate..
would you be calling it "The Monroe" on the label?
Do you like building with maple?

Thank you for the birthday greeting.

We'll put a dedication with his name on the label.

I like maple when it's of this quality. It's hard to find maple that isn't heavy and dense. This plank is very light and has a nice tap tone, I'll know more after I saw out the guitar sets. I intended to do that today but my garden needed watering and someone was hounding me about washing windows . When I build with maple I try to keep in mind a wonderful Manuel de la Chica made with flame maple that I played about 40 years ago.

Wow John, it sounds like it will be one slick looking guitar. Have you decided what your going to use for the top wood yet?

Was is it one of the goats milk cheeses from Pt. Reyes?

Cow's milk bleu. It's one of my favorite cheeses along with Regina and Montag bleu. Of course at my advanced age cheese is pretty much forbidden except for the occasional fete.

Yesterday I resawed the maple, Bubinga and Padauk that was mentioned above I'll post a picture if I can get my computer to upload it properly. The maple is quite striking due to the perfect quatering unfortunately it doesn't show any flame. How I love my resaw!
