Were there indications what is considered heavy exposure? Woods can be sensitizers, and POC is a very potent wood in terms of odor and it's blush of oil release when you cut or plane it.

update: my father has a decent sized piece of IRW that he's had in storage for at least 10 years. Not ideal for the fingerboard (my current guitar has a IRW fretboard and there are quite a few indents from playing). With that said it will be much lighter. So my plan now is to stick with the bloodwood binding and go with an IRW fretboard and bridge. Also, I'm picking up another soundboard (leaning towards trying sitka spruce) to have two to work on in case we make a fatal mistake on one or if they both survive our hands we'll have a choice.

In terms of health hazards associated with POC, I'm not too concerned. For one we are doing this project as a one and done kind of thing for the moment. On the same note, my dad was making something with Bubinga for a client and he broke out in horrible hives. I remember it was during Christmas and we went to my grandfather's house (my mom's dad) and he looked like a leper, or maybe like this icon ... it was kind of worrisome honestly. I think he ended up finishing the piece though.

Getting excited to start this project soon, I fly into the States on the 22nd (I live abroad in Bogota, Colombia) and from there on I'll be working really hard on this thing and hopefully organized and motivated enough to post our progress (or lack there of) on the foro. We'll definitely have questions.

It's no joke. Woods can be very toxic to certain people. Cocobolo is especially noxious. You have to be careful because the reaction for some people is allergic and it can swell your eyes and throat. Most of us don't have these problems with moderate exposure, but you never know.

hey estebana, I understand you are in the Bay area right? I'll be in SF from October 8th through the 18th. So if we end up getting the guitar done in time its coming with me and it would be great to get your opinion on it. I have studied a bit with Evan Harrar, whom I assume you know, and so I'll be over there in the Berkley area as well for a couple of sessions with him.

wfrancis86, I actually added the info on POC toxicity, because it is us one-and-doners that might not take the proper precautions with these woods. Plus, it may be important to consider these things if someone has a pre-existing condition…

estebanana, I do not think anyone knows what level is considered heavy exposure, or even to what extent the kidneys are affected by “heavy” exposure. It seems the only reason it is known that POC can affect the kidneys is because mill workers developed symptoms. So mills had to cut POC in small intervals to help protect employees. It may be a non-issue at the guitar building level. It just reminded me that I should be careful with these woods, especially since I am not building in a properly equipped workshop. I did find it interesting that wood can affect one beyond the usual nasal, throat and lungs.

As for the screen name, I though you of all members might appreciate it. I actually thought of you when I picked it, because I remembered your “rum baking” and “rumba king” comments…

I know Evan, I sometimes do repair work for his students. Please stop by and bring him to my shop with you if possible. If not be on the lookout for flamenco events during your stay here. There area few on going gigs and there should be a Bay Area Flamenco Festival event in Oct. Just send me an email when your visit is close.
