Tennis ranking question

http://www.atpworldtour.com/Rankings/Singles.aspx/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Wimbledon_Championships#Prize_money_and_ranking_points

I keep reading and hearing commentators say that if Federer wins the Wimbledon final tomorrow, then he will regain the number 1 spot in the ATP world rankings. I really do not understand how that is the case. Djokovic has 12,280 points and Federer has 9,435 points.

According to the number of points mentioned on Wikipedia above for Wimbledon, Djokovic got to the semi-finals so he's got 720 points, and if Federer wins, he'll get 2,000 point. If you do the math, Federer will still lag behind Djokovic in terms of the total number of points. So I don't really understand why people are talking about Federer regaining the number 1 spot.

Do I really suck at math, or am I missing something in the logic here?

Cheers!

Some stuff I found online:

"Nadal wasn't ahead of Federer by much. Nadal had to defend finals points but lost in the 2nd round; he basically loses 1155 pts. Djokovic loses points equal to the difference between his win last year and the semis (1280 pts). If Federer wins, he will gain 1280 pts (he lost in the quarters last year)."

"Novak is currently on 12280 points, he gained 720 points for this year's Wimbledon, but lost 2000 points because his victory last year at Wimbledon has rolled off the 12-month ranking system, so his points total on Monday will be 11000 points.

On the other hand, Roger is currently sitting on 9435 points, if he wins the tournament, he would gain 2000 points while losing 360 points from only making the quarter finals at last year's Wimbledon, hence his hypothetical total come Monday would be 11075 points, just enough to get ahead of Novak for #1"

"I did the math. Nadal will lose 1,155 points because he made the final last year (1,200 pts) and only second round this year (45 pts). He will go down from 10,060 to 8,905.

Djokovic will lose 1280 points (winnner last year 2,000 minus semi this year 720. He will go down from 12,280 to 11,000.

Federer needs to win final to be #1. If he does ghe will gain 1,640 points (2000 this year minus 360 for quarter final last year. He will go up to 11,075 if he winns (9,435 plus 1,640). If Federer loses in final he will be at 10,275 (only gaining 840 from last year) "

More complicated than I thought!

I love these posts where someone asks a question and then answers it himself before anyone else.....
Another thing. Federer is such an elegant player and such a gentleman, that I always want him to winn. In my eyes, he´s the best ever. But the british really need to be cheared up. Its been raining all the summer, so I dont know. Well, I know. If Murray winns, then its ok.

The final was a win-win situation at our house: if Roger won, our favourite guy equalled Sampras and got back to Nº 1; If Andy won, we Brits got our first male singles champion in 76 years.

And anyway, Jumping Jonny Marray won the Doubles (with Freddie Nielsen) — another first for 76 years! (They were saying that 5th-seed Robert Lindstedt smashed four (4) racquets in rage in the locker-room afterwards.)

If you look at it with Danish eyes... First one ever.... All categories.
