RE: What if there was no more internet? (in reply to ralexander

funny thing is when go turn the computer on to do 2, 3 relatively important things on the net (not casual stuff like reading foro), that take 5 min MAX, and then 2 hours have passed and youve totally forgotten what you wanted to do?!
i find the distinction between real life and internet pretty funny too, as if the internet has not already gotten a part of daily life of everybody. anyway, to the OP: you can turn it off anytime. chester is right in his points.

Yes, of course we can turn it off at anytime - I mentioned my habits as an example, but what I was really thinking about was how the world might be different if it didn't exist at all.

As I mentioned, I'm happier when disconnected so I've been making a conscious effort to reduce my usage instead of mindlessly surfing as many of us are prone to. It feels great!

Well, you would send letter to a friend in the UK saying....

"OMG! Check out this newspaper cutting!"

And a week later get a letter back saying....

"LOL!"

cheers,

Ron

Just found this quote from guitarist Joe Walsh regarding his new album Analog Man - I thought it was rather profound:

"Through music, I'm trying to show that we live on an analog planet, which we're systematically trashing, while we're spending more and more time in the virtual world, which doesn't exist. It's an illusion made by computers. What's really happening is that we're sitting in chairs while our bodies are waiting for our minds to come back."

amen...that alone is worth it...the internet is responsible for a lot of what i have learned ...but yes i do think its up to you to use in moderation...dont substitute it for real life that's important (dont even substitute flamenco for life)... ...however for some this is all they have so u know...better this than being completely isolated and cut of from the world...or starring at a wall

for the local flamenco scene facebook and internet have been a huge helper in the making flamenco bigger, artists from different cities collaborating...HUGE impact...a lot of negotiating and booking happens on facebook...u dont need his number and you have every flamenco person right there...whatever you need, singer, dancer, cajon guitarist...all in your living room everyday...ask a question u get a replie in a few hours sometimes minutes...u never worked with someone and need to know what they like...youtube

all and all theres way more pluses to the internet than the negative impact it has on those of us who dont manage our time efficiantly

OK we agree that it is good for access to information, but do you really think that people would just not talk to each other? That's a pretty sad thought.

I live in Nova Scotia, Canada, and have definitely enjoyed access to information such as flamenco history and music. It can be a truly great resource. It's so engrained in our existence now, it's staggering to even think of all the ways it affects us. What I've been pondering is that overall it seems to be having a negative impact on real human connections. Posing a question like "what if it didn't exist" is definitely not practical, and admittedly a bit silly and romantic. Having said that, people got on just fine before it came to be. Maybe I was born in the wrong generation?

no of course not...they would but not as much imo and only with those immediately around you...phone calls ...u cant only make so many...and then u can only talk so long...cant do much other stuff during it..

and there are some in remote places where there aren't other flamenco people near them

but i agree there would be some things that would be great without the internet...i think many would be more enticed to go do stuff more often, see something, see a movie, a band...socialize...but for that a few other things would have to be different too, like no pokies in every pub..etc.

pokies in pubs in Australia really really hurt the live music scene

How does a poker machine hurt anyone except whoever's playing it?

Don't you think it's the cheap and money-hungry owners/managers that are really hurting the scene?

I didn't realize people stopped going out since the internet was invented. Someone should tell all those people I keep seeing on the street...

Well because when all those people who are content to play this machines sit there like robots not moving or socializing making hiring a band useless to a pub owner ...he can make the same money or more without doing anything but giving change.....so its affecting more than just whomever is playing it...its affecting musicians, its affecting those other people who might wanna socialize but everyone is a robot in front of a machine so whats the point going there...and its affecting the families of those poor bastards who are losing their wages to this machines...and as a result its also affecting retail cause after losing $500 of your pay whose gonna spend the last $50 till next pay on a dinner at a restaurant or a pair of jeans etc...

so its affecting everyone...

its a business...so if given the option...yes they probably are going to always go for whatever is safer, costs less and makes most money...noone that owns a bussines is going to chose to make less money if they have an option to make more, do less and its safer for them...they never lose in the long run

85% of pubs in Australia have pokies...gambling is a disease, heroin is illegal but pokies aren't...its a government/legislation problem...they take peoples money (usually ones that need it the most and pensioners) then spend 5% of it on advertisements telling people gambling is bad...so they look like the good guys...same with cigarets...its so full of sh*t that i dont even wanna think about it..

well theres pokies everywhere and we like it because get 80% of it on tax...but you shouldn't gamble...if no one should gamble ...why not make it inaccessible why not help those affected

they must be the ones with iphones :-)

I think that there would be even more going out..i know i am more content staying home sometimes...instead of going to the cinema to see the latest movie, download it in 20 mins and watch it at home..now i am not that different from other people

I know that at times Facebook satisfies that socializing (even if in fake virtual world) and interacting need or I would probably seek else where ...when i didn't have internet or computer, i went to the city to catch up with friends for coffee more often

so yes i think internet does effect peoples tendencies

Actually it really sucks that you can watch porn whenever you want and each type of woman you want and each type of position you want, etc. with internet.

I remember a time when i was really young and had never watched porn before, and when you saw a sexy girl you liked, you were really excited and you started to imagine a story how it would be with her, and how she would look like naked and all that was 100 times better and more exciting than nowadays watching 10000s of bitches (no matter how good they look) spreading their legs within seconds and showing you everything they have as if its nothing.

Now i watched a lot of porn too until few years ago (in the times when i had no girlfriend), when at some point i realized that i am actually destroying all my fantasy and all the excitement, etc.
It does actually the exact opposite.

Best Regards,
Dr. Arash

I meant for example: I wouldn´t talk to you like now..because,.. it would not be possible. Internet connects.

There is no point in arguing if internet is useless or not because it´s absolutely necessary nowadays. Even if some people here solely use it for watching porn and can´t imagine why it is important.

In 5 years we will see Flo in a porn movie shoving his guitar in to an Elephants ass, and at the same time the elephants trunk is playing with Flo's noodle ,,,, no more woman at all..... if these fantasies continue to grow in his mind....
